Reporting to the Head of Education, Work, and Skills, you will lead a team of instructors and employment coaches, fostering a culture of performance that equips prisoners with critical work skills for successful career transitions upon release. 

As the Skills and Work Departmental Senior Manager, you will be an integral part of the mobilisation team for a brand-new prison facility. This role offers the unique and exciting challenge of establishing new structures, recruiting your team, and shaping the landscape of our Industrial Workshop spaces from the ground up. Your leadership and expertise will be crucial in creating a culture of excellence and continuous improvement, making a real difference in individuals' futures. 

The role: 

  • Oversee activities within industries, workshops, and land-based areas, ensuring training is conducted within a realistic working environment. 

  • Develop and revise local policies, improvement plans, and procedures to suit the function’s needs, ensuring alignment with overall prison objectives. 

  • Create a respectful, safe, and decent environment for all prisoners and staff within the Industries department. 

  • Provide expert advice to the Senior Management Team on industry-related areas. 

  •  Set and monitor production targets, ensuring all work meets required standards and contributes to income generation. 

  • Schedule and manage training and production activities to meet targets and quality standards, ensuring compliance with contractual arrangements. 

  • Manage income generation targets, verifying and signing off on documentation as appropriate. 

  • Collaborate with colleagues to create and implement an effective employment strategy, enhancing employment training and guidance for prisoners upon release. 

  • Seek commercial work to fill production capacity, prepare quotations for potential products, and manage successful private sector partnerships, colleges, and training centers. 

  • Oversee the ordering, logging, storage, utilization, and disposal of materials, ensuring prisoners are supervised, inducted, trained, and deployed appropriately. 

What We're Looking For: 

  • Must hold or be working towards IOSH and qualified to level 4 or above. 

  • Strong leadership with the ability to motivate and manage diverse teams. 

  • Excellence in communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and negotiate effectively with stakeholders and partners. 

  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic thinking skills. 

  • Understanding of ISO9001 standards or equivalent quality management systems, Health and Safety requirements in industrial settings, and adult learning principles. 

  • Proven experience in an industrial or commercial training/production environment, managing large teams, driving performance in production workshops, budget management, and ensuring compliance with policies and regulations. 

  • Ability to handle conflicts, disciplinary issues, and emergencies effectively while adapting to changing priorities. 

  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong networks and relationships both internally and externally, promoting prisoner employment and resettlement.
