Job description

Job responsibilities

The overall job purpose for the Sister/Charge Nurse is to provide clinical and managerial leadership to the nursing and multidisciplinary team. This includes acting as a clinical leader and expert practitioner liaising, guiding and advising the multidisciplinary team in the provision of optimum patient care.

This will require the Sister/Charge Nurse to regularly review the clinical records of patients under their sphere of responsibility, to evaluate the effectiveness of the standard of care planning and delivery, and to use the results to work with the team to improve patient outcomes.

Within their leadership role they will be responsible for providing feedback on the evaluation of good and poor practice to the team members ensuring effective role modelling, ongoing management and clinical supervision, and mentorship to the team.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Registered Nurse with live NMC Pin. Previous Experience at a senior level (band 6 or above). Post basic relevant study equivalent to degree level or willingness to complete. Committed to on-going professional development. Recognised teaching qualification. Evidence of leadership training.

Physical Skills

Essential

Ability to work flexibly to meet service needs. Able to provide personal care for patients in a ward environment.

Aptitudes

Essential

Proven teaching ability and experience of being an effective mentor/preceptor or facilitator. Evidence of involvement with quality improvement in the clinical area. Demonstrated an understanding of quality and clinical governance issues. Can demonstrate key competencies of our vision, values and behaviours.

Abilities

Essential

Proven managerial experience at deputy level. Ability to motivate and lead the ward team and maintain good working relationships. Ability to supervise junior staff and maintain high standards of care. Ability to prioritised own workload and that of others. Ability to work on own initiative.

Communication Skills

Essential

Evidence of good written and oral communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.
