Job summary

As an Occupational Therapy Assistant Practitioner you will support the work of the Occupational Therapists in working with adults with mental disorders who have transitioned from secure mental health settings into the community (or are in the process of doing so). You will be an effective member of the Forensic Community Service (FCS), creatively supporting service-users to promote recovery, reduce the likelihood of readmission and reduce risk of offending.

Within the role you will work under the supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist within the Specialist Network. You will carry out specific observation and informal assessments and some treatment programmes under the supervision of and devised by the therapists. You will work in a range of environments person's home, community settings, trust sites.

You will ideally have experience of working in patient facing roles, possibly alongside or with Occupational Therapists and/or in mental health settings, working with people who experience psychosis including those with complex presentations and increased risk. You will be expected to have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. To enable you to provide high quality care you will build professional therapeutic relationships with service users and communicate in a way that respects their views, autonomy and culture.

Main duties of the job

To work independently with service users in a variety of settings under the guidance of OTs

To meet regularly with supervising clinician to review work

To highlight individual's changing needs or wider service issues affecting an individual's care.

Support individuals to achieve optimum potential by promoting independence and self-care as appropriate

To instruct individuals and carers in safe and effective use of equipment aids and adaptations within their own area of competence.

To provide support and assist in the preparation and running of therapy groups.

To support social inclusion and occupational participation.

To act as an advocate to facilitate views and choices expressed by individuals.

To develop rapport with individuals and to encourage their interest and participation in specified therapeutic activities.

To contribute to the assessment of and adhere to risk management measures under direction of therapist

To work within the Mental capacity act framework
