PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a financial regulation  Associate  to join the London Team, but you will be part of our UK team and work with Partners and for clients across the UK and internationally. You will be part of a team of financial regulatory specialists with extensive experience in advising banks, building societies, investment firms, financial market infrastructure and participants in wholesale financial markets, on prudential regulation. THE TEAM

Addleshaw Goddard's Financial Regulation Team is one of the largest in the UK, ranked Tier 1 in Chambers and Partners. The team consists of a mix of lawyers and compliance professionals split over Leeds, London, and Scotland. The team is headed up by Rosanna Bryant and 9 other Partners with around 18 other fee earners. The Financial Regulation team is independently recognised as first rate and having "client focus and a pragmatic approach in complicated situations". Our UK Financial Regulation Team works collaboratively with international colleagues across the AG network.

This role involves working with our Partners focussed on advising banks, building societies, investment firms, financial market infrastructure and participants in wholesale financial markets, on prudential regulation. We have a strong focus on supporting our clients in meeting their regulatory requirements including in relation to capital and liquidity, operational resilience, recovery and resolution planning, ring-fencing, governance and risk management and digital assets. We also advise on markets, clearing, and settlement, including the regulation of exchanges and trading platforms. Our team provides stand-alone advisory support to its clients, regulatory support to strategic transactions, supports navigation of regulatory processes and provides guidance on prudential supervision, helping clients navigate the increasingly complex regulatory landscape.

More broadly, the Financial Regulation team advises on regulated lending and banking, consumer finance, payments, and e-money regulation, general and long-term (investment) insurance distribution, retail wealth and investments, pensions, fund management and investment advice. Our team includes regulatory compliance specialists who assist clients with all elements of their compliance programmes, including interactions with regulators. 

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS ROLE

This role is ideal for a committed lawyer who is looking to develop well-rounded expertise in prudential regulation, be part of an ambitious and growing team and has a desire to advance their career and create a name for themselves. You'll be expected to play a central role in the Team, including involvement in business development and all aspects of practice management, collaborating with International colleagues and engage in regular client contact. The team will take a genuine interest and support you with your development therefore offering excellent career prospects.

You will handle your own matters and assist the Partners (James Greig and Tess Kelly) and work with a Legal Director and other Associates on more complex matters, delivering high quality work to clients as well as helping to win new work. You can expect to have the opportunity to play a significant role in working for clients that are key to the Group and to the firm. As part of this you may have the opportunity to undertake client secondments to assist our clients and to build your skills and expertise further. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the international AG office network.

You will:

Support our clients in meeting their regulatory requirements in relation to all aspects of prudential regulation. Provide structuring advice and support regulatory processes in connection with strategic transactions. Assist clients in understanding the risks and opportunities of regulatory divergence between the UK and EU. Help clients assess the impact of new or proposed legislation and informing their implementation or lobbying strategies; Provide guidance to interpret legal requirements, such as UK implementation of Basel 3.1 standards; Provide strategic advice on engagement with UK financial services regulators.

YOUR AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE

Currently be in a similar role as a financial regulation lawyer, working on prudential regulation of banks, building societies, investment firms, financial market infrastructure and participants in wholesale financial markets. Most importantly, you should have a real and genuine interest in this area and be keen to grow that knowledge in a proactive way. You should be adept at building strong client relationships and like working in a team. You should be willing to get involved in business development, building your own external profile and practice management in an ambitious and growing team. You should be interested in and willing to develop relationships with colleagues in the AG international office network and work collaboratively on cross-border mandates. Our ideal candidate should have a keen intellect and a commercial mindset. You will be able to demonstrate that you are able to provide pragmatic and tailored advice in a way that supports internal and external clients alike. You will have the interest and ability to actively support complex transactions, liaising and coordinating with fee earners from other relevant disciplines as needed You should have: an understanding appropriate to your level of qualification of the UK prudential regulatory framework for some or all of banks, building societies, investment firms, financial market infrastructure and participants in wholesale financial markets; existing experience of working on some areas of prudential regulation including capital and liquidity, operational resilience, recovery and resolution planning, ring-fencing, governance and risk management, MIFIR, payments, clearing, settlement and crypto/digital assets. You will be able to deliver clear and concise advice, confident in its technical basis but user friendly to busy executives, with an appropriate level of oversight. You will be flexible and work to our clients' deadlines, understanding that at times, external forces dictate timescales.
