Job summary

This is a key role in developing and maintaining high standards of care for women with mental health problems in pregnancy and the postnatal period, and their families. You will develop a higher level of relevant expert knowledge and skills, which you will use to manage, develop and lead care for pregnant and new mothers with mental health needs. You will work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual needs. You will ensure that relevant pathways, policies and processes for women with, or at risk of, mental illness are followed and audited. This will involve working with a range of professionals, services and agencies. Within this role you will work with the Specialist Midwives for Mental Health to ensure that the relevant support and training is available and cascaded to all staff.

Main duties of the job

Main Responsibilities

Support and advocate without prejudice for the needs of women with perinatal mental illness, optimising emotional wellbeing alongside physical health. Provide advice and support to maternity colleagues to ensure that screening and identification of perinatal mental illness takes place. Offer additional mental health support contact for women experiencing mental health difficulties and who are without a mental health provider or whose mental health provision needs supplementation for specific midwifery context. Work autonomously with the supervision and support of the Specialist Midwives for Mental Health. Provide support to the continuity team and community midwives who have complex caseloads. Deputise for the Specialist Midwives for Mental Health when needed, being a key point of contact for the maternity team and providing specialist advice to enable colleagues to give safe, evidence-based care. Facilitate good communication links with the below groups, liaising with them to improve service provision and provide seamless care, without gaps or duplication in provision: Midwives, MSWs and obstetriciansOUH Perinatal PsychiatristSpecialist Midwife - Trauma Informed CareGPsHealth VisitorsSpecialist mental health servicesMental health and maternity services outside Oxfordshire Work with the Specialist Midwives for Mental Health to deliver education and training that builds knowledge and confidence for all maternity colleagues.

Clinical responsibilities

Support the specialist mental health midwives and Matron to develop, implement and review maternal mental health practice across the Trust and networks. Be able to participate in specific working groups to achieve targets, objectives and audits in relation to maternal mental health, taking a lead for identified areas where agreed. To demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of the team and work across agency and organisational boundaries. To utilise the Trust IT systems and Oxford Health IT systems in accordance with information sharing agreements. Maintain data collections that will provide timely and accurate data. To deliver mental health training to support the competencies of staff. Develop good communication and liaison networks with all disciplines across a variety of statutory agencies. Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records of involvement of safeguarding in line with Trust policy and NMC guidance. Develop and maintain specialist knowledge of midwifery practice relevant to the clinical area. Fulfil the role of a midwife as defined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Rules and Code of Practice and reflect the Trusts guidelines, polices and standards of practice.
