As Senior Analytical Scientist within our Analytical Science Research and Development group your main role is to contribute and develop our data processing, data analysis and data interpretation of mass spectrometry data for biological samples used for biomarker discovery and validation. Alongside plan and undertake experiments intrinsic to Owlstone Medical’s assay/application/ product development projects.

Key Tasks & Accountabilities

  • Develop, process, analyse and evaluate quantitative GC - mass spectrometry data for untargeted and targeted metabolomics and breathomics studies. 
  • Develop and review quantitative workflows and data structure to efficiently integrate and/or develop automated data processing. 
  • Provide technical review of work produced by junior members within the group, provide feedback on work and act as a mentor to ensure their continual technical development. Develop, combine, and review open-source and/or commercially available software tools for enabling feature extraction and compound identification. 
  • Plan and undertake experiments intrinsic to Owlstone Medical assay/application/product development projects. 
  • Process, interpret and report on acquired experimental data, ensuring that findings are scientifically accurate and are disseminated to relevant Stakeholders.

Person Specification

Education & Training

  • BS / MS / PHD, or equivalent in metabolomics, analytical chemistry, or life sciences. 

Experience / Knowledge

Essential 

  • Hands on experience with common software packages for data processing of metabolomics data (e.g., XCMS, MZmine, Thermo Compound Discoverer & Chromeleon, Agilent Mass Hunter Quant and AnalyzerPro)  
  • Proven experience in pre-processing and pre-treatment of GC-MS data in the context of untargeted and targeted analysis.  
  • Proven experience in building QA/QC workflows for processing GC-MS data 
  • Experience in writing Python code and software versioning tools (e.g. Git/Github). 
  • Proven impactful collaboration within a multidisciplinary team  
  • Proven effective communication and interpretation of complex experimental results to relevant stakeholders across a multiple discipline. 

Desirable  

  • Experience in structural elucidation using mass spectrometry data would be an advantage. 
  • Experience in writing code R and MATLAB  
  • Formal education in analytical chemistry would be an advantage.
