What will I be doing as an apprentice?A Laboratory Technician can be found in many industries including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and construction. The broad purpose of the occupation is working at the forefront of technology to carry out both routine and one-off laboratory testing in a controlled environment. The Lab Technician interacts and supports various departments, such as manufacturing, procurement, and quality to make sure that the product being produced is to the highest quality, H&S compliant, and cost effective. The types of products produced and tested may include materials such as concrete and asphalt. The materials may be currently in use or part of an R&D project. As well as this, the technician will be responsible for keeping accurate records, maintenance checks of equipment, and working to both company, legal, and industry standards (UKAS, ISO, NRA, BS) and will be supervised by an assigned mentor / supervisor. The role is site/plant based and will involve manual work in busy work environments.
  What you’ll be doing:
  • Supporting the testing and sampling of various materials to be used on site;
  • Maintain a safe and tidy workspace and ensure the efficient running of the laboratory;
  • Maintain quality standards by following Company and accrediting bodies quality procedures and protocol;
  • Record sample details on test record sheets and laboratory software;
  • Calibrating testing equipment and reporting any faults and damages and regular checks set out by management;
  • Support inspections and auditing;
  • Investigate material related complaints, providing solutions and feedback to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Keeping up to date records of company, legal, industry changes to policy and regulations;
  • Working to a high level of H&S, environmental compliance, and quality assurance.

What could the future look like?
Our goal is to transform you into a fully competent member of the team, with a strong chance for opportunities for permanent employment and progression in the future.  Through ‘on-the-job’ training you’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills to provide competency and responsibility in carrying out testing and to help develop your career and the business as a whole.   This apprenticeship can also help pave the way for further educational and professional advancement.
Skills, Knowledge, and ExperienceAbout you  We are looking for someone who is interested and passionate about a career within the construction industry as well as an interest in material testing and quality/compliance management. If you are someone who has labouring experience but feels lost in what the future holds, this could be a great way to create a career for yourself and learn great skills along the way. Although this is not a physically intense role, you will be on your feet for most of the day and executing manual handling tasks. Someone who is looking for a new opportunity in the industry with a bit of experience and ability to speak to external partners would be ideal.

Person Specification:
  • Proactive approach, taking pride in their work and taking accountability for decisions.
  • A love of variety in a role and ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced working environment
  • Ability to quickly prioritise tasks and the initiative to dive head-first into problem solving

  • Ability to analyse and interpret information and effectively communicate this to different team members and audiences
  • Ability to visit different sites and training days
  • Curiosity to learn quickly in a reactive and dynamic working environment.

About K10 Apprenticeships

We are UK’s largest construction-specific Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agency. Founded in 2009, we are an award-winning social enterprise with a passion to convert potential.

Our aim is to place our learners in sustainable employment on projects in their local area. To do this, we collaborate with government, referral organisations, local authorities, developers, contractors, and colleges, to deliver apprenticeship programmes specifically designed to upskill the future of construction.
So how does the apprenticeship work?At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.

Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Associated Asphalt Contracting who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.

The best part? You’ll be earning a salary while you gain your qualifications, meaning no huge student loans to pay back at the end of the programme

In Latin, it means novice, recruit, apprentice, beginner and soldier. The perfect name for a company that’s been helping fearless apprentices to join ambitious businesses since 2005.

We believe that great apprenticeships help everyone. There are remarkable apprentices out there just waiting to be found, and fantastic employment opportunities waiting to be filled.

Our work will never be just about getting bums on seats and pocketing our commission. In our own small way, we’re helping to change the world – finding people that are working on COVID vaccines, finding new ways for technology to help humanity and helping to tackle the big issues of the day, like climate change. As well as helping people – young and old – to find their way.
