We are looking for someone who can bring effective clinicalsupport, to develop, monitor and then provide ongoing evaluation of thenew service in conjunction with the other members of the senioroperational and clinical leadership team.

This is an exciting and ambitious programme that willdeliver measurable benefits for those people with a learning disability andautistic people by providing the physical and clinical environment thatsupports patients and contributes to improved wellbeing.

The applicant will work as a specialty doctor on a 10-bedinpatient psychiatric ward for people with learning disability and/or autism,with co-morbid mental disorder. Duties include direct clinical care, such asward rounds, physical and mental state examinations and supporting professionalactivities such as the monthly clinical educational programme.

Outputs from the programme:

Improved care pathway for those with a learning disability and autistic people across community (inreach / outreach) and inpatient care. Improvements in the physical infrastructure to deliver better care and outcomes for service users, whilst aiming for a length of stay of less than twelve months. Reducing the requirement for out of area admissions. Improved care and inpatient experiences for people within the South West Region with a learning disability and/or autistic people. Treating people closer to home whilst reducing reliance on inpatient beds. Delivery of innovative solutions and improvements to the therapeutic environment and service model that delivers a positive impact to service users.

You will be part of a large multi-disciplinary team, with the opportunity to shape and develop the team to deliver consistently high quality care and treatment. You will also support the transition from our existing service to the new development. The new unit will be state of the art and has been carefully designed and developed with clinicians and people with lived experience.

Qualifications

Essential

MB BS or equivalent. GMC registration.

Desirable

Membership or Affiliateship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent. Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Clinical Governance

Essential

Commitment to involvement in on site programme of clinical governance.

Desirable

Knowledge of evidence based practice, clinical audit and involvement of users and carers in service provision.

CPD and Motivation

Essential

Commitment to process of CPD. Ability to organise own learning/CPD.

Desirable

Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists for CPD.

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential

Excellent clinical skills in interviewing and physical and psychological assessment of patients. Writing comprehensive, clear medical notes. Ability to manage crises and act independently. Ability to manage potentially violent and disturbed patients. Confidence in assessing and managing physical health problems and emergencies. Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Desirable

Up to date CPR training. Ability to apply psychological models to practical situations. Evidence based knowledge of psychiatry of Intellectual Disabilities. Knowledge of clinical risk management. Knowledge of relevant Mental Health legislation.

Research

Essential

Interest in maintaining up to date clinical knowledge base.

Desirable

Enthusiasm to contribute to research on site. Publications in peer reviewed journals. IT skills.

Personal Skills/Practical & Physical Arrangements

Essential

Ability to communicate with clarity in spoken and written form. Flexible approach, keen to accept new challenges. Punctuality/good time management. Honesty and integrity. Well organised. Meets professional health requirements.

Desirable

Ability to critically examine practice. Access to appropriate transport to fulfil the post.

Experience

Essential

Has completed at least four years full-time postgraduate experience (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of these years need to be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or the doctor has equivalent experience and competencies.

Desirable

Experience at Resident (formerly junior) doctor level or above of working in the field of Psychiatry of Intellectual Disabilities or with autistic adults in other contexts.
