The Role

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to provide location based management of technical services as part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences Infrastructure team. This will include working with the senior Infrastructure team and as part of a community of Team Leaders across a range of locations to deliver a consistent, resilient and professional technical service. This will include managing many complex aspects of Estates, Health & Safety and laboratory technical services provision. The role will have a defined building base location on appointment.

You must be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of problem solving, flexible approach to working, team working and decision-making. The ability to build and develop networks is essential. A strong background in a related scientific discipline is required (BTEC HNC/HND is required) with significant professional experience in laboratory based biomedicine.

Key Accountabilities

As a senior Professional Service leader, have collective responsibility for the vision of the Faculty, fostering a culture of service excellence Communicate the University and Faculty Strategies, inspiring colleagues by bringing the Vision to life and giving it meaning in the context of the Faculty and its aspirations  Ensure a truly inclusive and respectful environment, by role modelling behaviours and ensuring the implementation of all Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (ED&I) policies and action plans such as Athena SWAN. The post holder will be expected to lead on actions and initiatives which promote ED&I and which support the Faculty’s ambitions to become an exemplar To lead and develop culture change to transform the PS of the Faculty into a PS team, working in one way, with key business partners and the rest of the University. This will include bringing staff together into networks and communities and leading and supporting these networks  To lead, manage and develop a technical team, ensuring effective performance. This will include responsibility for staff induction, training, performance management and Performance Development Review (PDR), the allocation and prioritisation of duties where appropriate. They will also aid with recruitment and authorisation of annual leave To support the Institute Technical Manager team with the planning, organisation and administration of the estate and wider technical service within their team’s area of responsibility. To ensure the effective maintenance, security and facility management of the specific location including any third party arrangements. To lead on discrete estate related projects, including University wide initiatives To provide man down, emergency responder and/or deputy support for the Faculty Infectious Diseases Facility In conjunction with the Institute Technical Manager team ensure satisfactory maintenance, repair and calibration of all equipment and instrumentation within their location To assist in the forward planning to upgrade and replace equipment. In collaboration with the relevant Faculty team, to assist on the maintenance of the location Asset Register for planning and insurance purposes Monitor and maintain safe working environment to Health and Safety guidelines in conjunction with the Institute Safety Officer team. Attend local safety committees for the specific location as required Budgetary responsibilities, working with the Finance Business Partner to ensure effective financial planning, management and sustainability of the location, including approval of defined expenditure within the location where applicable Local line management of technical staff operating across the location  Management of any relevant HR processes related to the local technical team  To manage and organise the Faculty’s laboratories, workshops and facilities for the specific location to ensure safe, secure and effective operation. This to include line management of associated technical staff; liaison with academic stake holders for the location to ensure uniform and consistent delivery of research; and reviewing relevant research deadlines to ensure any organisational issues are addressed in a timely fashion  To provide research based project work (laboratory, workshop or facility based) appropriately as required including provision of specialist advice and liaison with relevant academic staff. Timely ordering of required consumables to support research needs To inform academic staff of safety and legal compliance issues related to location specific research activity. To provide local advice and guidance to academic staff with regard to the production of Health & Safety documentation

The Person 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Substantial work experience in supporting research activity in a HEI laboratory, workshop or facility setting or relevant work environment with a proven track record of leading a technical team Up to date and detailed knowledge of relevant Health & Safety policy and procedure in a laboratory based setting & confident in advising colleagues on policy & procedure Ability to implement and manage change with demonstrable recent experience and skills in staff management, and the ability to motivate and develop members of a team  Proven written and verbal communication skills High level planning, organising and technical problem solving skills, with a proactive and innovative approach to problem solving utilising excellent prioritisation skills, and the ability to delegate tasks Evidence of project management and financial budgetary management Good numerical skills and the ability to manipulate, analyse and present information for management use Experience of working collaboratively with academic staff Able to analyse, manipulate data for downstream use Excellent communication skills to be able to motivate staff & implement change  Evidence of Estates networks, resolving maintenance problems, managing refurbishment projects and/or understanding of estates processes and procedures

Degree or equivalent level qualification in a relevant subject or significant vocational experience, demonstrating development through progressively more demanding relevant roles
