The Role
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced laboratory technician to join our School of Pharmacy to lead a team of technicians and provide specialised technical support to teaching and research, across the School and our wider University facilities.
You will be an inspirational leader and role model, demonstrating the highest standards of leadership and behaviour and contributing strategically to the development of an outstanding professional service. A positive and proactive approach is essential to ensure our laboratories are equipped and maintained to deliver excellent standards of service delivery. You will be adaptable to change and able to take an innovative approach to support academic colleagues in the development of our facilities to maximise their potential across teaching, research and commercial activities.
To be successful in this role, you will have substantial technical experience in pharmaceutical science and excellent communication skills with up-to-date, detailed knowledge of relevant Health & Safety policy and procedure in a laboratory based setting. Acting as School Health and Safety officer, it is essential to be confident in advising colleagues on H&S policy & procedure and provide local inductions to staff and students.
You will be based in our School of Pharmacy laboratories, with access to a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment. You will be part of a wider Faculty of Medical Sciences community of technicians with access to continuous professional development and a network of staff who are committed to the University’s vision and values to work collaboratively and share experience and best practice to deliver excellence, creativity and impact.

Key Accountabilities
As a senior Professional Service leader, have collective responsibility for the vision of the Faculty, fostering a culture of service excellence Communicate the University and Faculty Strategies, inspiring colleagues by bringing the Vision to life and giving it meaning in the context of the Faculty and its aspirations Ensure a truly inclusive and respectful environment, by role modelling behaviours and ensuring the implementation of all Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (ED&I) policies and action plans such as Athena SWAN. You will be expected to lead on actions and initiatives which promote ED&I and which support the Faculty’s ambitions to become an exemplar To lead and develop culture change to transform the PS of the Faculty into a PS team, working in one way, with key business partners and the rest of the University. This will include bringing staff together into networks and communities and leading and supporting these networks To manage and organize the School laboratories, facilities and any associated areas to ensure the safe, secure and effective operation of these facilities. This includes line management of associated technical staff and liaison with academic stakeholders to facilitate access for research and commercial use To manage, plan and run formal practical teaching classes for the School including Open Days, student recruitment sessions, outreach events and any entrepreneurial enterprises that may use the School teaching laboratories Line management of all technical staff operating within the School and management of all relevant HR processes related to the School technical team To support the Technical Manager for Education with the planning, organization and administration of the estate and wider technical services within their teams area of responsibility. To ensure the effective maintenance, security and facility management of the School, including third party arrangements. To lead on discrete estates related projects, including University wide initiatives In conjunction with the Technical Manager for Education, ensure satisfactory maintenance, repair and calibration of all equipment and instrumentation within their School. To assist in the forward planning to upgrade and replace equipment. In collaboration with the School management, to assist in the maintenance of the School’s asset register for planning & insurance purposes Monitor and maintain safe working environment to Health & Safety guidelines while operating as the School Health & Safety Officer. Attend relevant committees to represent the School. To advise & guide academic staff on legal compliance issues related to practical class provision. Liaison with academic staff in their preparation of relevant safety documentation Budgetary responsibilities, working with the Finance Business Partner to ensure effective financial planning, management and sustainability of the School infrastructure services, including responsibility where applicable for the approval of defined expenditure within the School To assist in the costing and/or monitoring of projects within the School being proposed or undertaken for by external agents including liaison with relevant University staff & external suppliers involved in the provision of goods and services To ensure uniform and consistent teaching delivery and review (and change where appropriate) the teaching timetables to ensure organizational issues are addressed in a timely fashion To provide relevant materials, specimens and equipment required for practical sessions, and deploy them appropriately to permit efficient working. Ensure the timely ordering of consumables to support practical teaching in the school which will often require specialist expertise and liaison with relevant academic staff To arrange with School technical team and relevant academic staff to test and modify proposed practical experiments to ensure suitability and reproducibility To provide research-based project work (laboratory, workshop or facility based) appropriately as required including provision of specialist advice and liaison with relevant academic staff. Substantial work experience in supporting research and teaching activity in a HEI laboratory, workshop or facility setting or relevant work environment with a proven track record of leading a technical team Up-to-date detailed knowledge of relevant Health & Safety policy and procedure in a laboratory based setting & confident in advising colleagues on policy & procedure Ability to implement and manage change with demonstrable recent experience and skills in staff management, and the ability to motivate and develop members of a team Proven written and verbal communication skills High level planning, organising and technical problem solving skills, with a proactive and innovative approach to problem solving utilising excellent prioritisation skills, and the ability to delegate tasks Experience of working collaboratively with academic staff Able to analyse, manipulate data for downstream useDesirable
