Our client is looking for a Director of Health, Safety and Environment to be responsible for all College sites that form this Education group.  

They are looking for a self-starter with a ‘can do’ attitude who can take health and safety within the group to the next level. With a college portfolio that includes a land-based provision you will possess a broad and deep understanding of health and safety legislation and its application within a teaching and learning environment. In the current climate of energy saving, recycling and better use of resources you will also be well versed in environmental legislation. 

You will be expected to build on the great work already completed within the Health and Safety department over the last few years, develop relationships and action plans to ensure improvements continue and are consistent across all sites. Similarly, the appointed individual will lead the ‘green agenda’ to ensure all Colleges are operating a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach.  

You must be prepared to work at all levels within the business and be prepared for travel within the North East area ranging from Hartlepool in the Tees Valley up to Berwick on the Scottish Borders, therefore you must have your own transport and a clean driving licence. 

You should possess a history of delivering performance improvements, cultural change and enhancing management systems in organisations with varying levels of HS&E maturity. 

You will hold a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent as a minimum and will be a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). Experience of sustainability is required as is a pragmatic approach to safety and the ability to engage and communicate with a wide range of stakeholders. 

ROLE PURPOSE 

  • Understand and ensure the implications and duties imposed by new Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, H.S.E. Guidance Notes and Codes of Practice are brought to the attention of the College Senior Leadership Team in a timely and structured way.  
  • Working with curriculum and support leaders, foster a proactive and collaborative approach towards health, safety and the environment at all College sites. 
  • Working with all business areas across the College identify an appropriate health and safety programme of training to ensure competency and legal compliance at all levels.  
  • Lead the health, safety and environmental function efficiently and effectively, embedding the College values and a safety culture into all areas. 
  • Ensure an ‘Excellence in all we do’ approach to improving health and safety performance, delivering a culture of high standards across all areas. 
  • Lead and champion the health, safety and environmental vision and agenda at all levels across the organisation to drive ownership and sustainable ways of operating. 
  • Define and deliver an environmental strategy for the portfolio of colleges, ensuring legal compliance across all College sites. 
  • Working with key College stakeholders, outline and implement new innovative and economically reductive ways to reduce the College’s environmental impact whilst achieving industry leading environmental and sustainability metrics and accreditations. 

Qualifications

  • Health & Safety Qualification – NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent or working towards 
  • Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) 
  • Level 2 Qualifications in English and maths. 
  • A valid driving licence 
  • At least 5 years health and safety experience in a senior post 
  • Experience of preparing and presenting reports to Executive Senior Leaders and Non-Executive Board members 
  • Proven completion of projects and driving performance 
  • Successful delivery of health and safety initiatives 
  • Implementing changes to improve health & safety culture within an organisation
