The vacant post CCT arthroplasty fellowship position is for 12 months, working across our network of hospitals (The Royal London Hospital, Bart’s Health Orthopaedic Centre and Whipps Cross Hospital). Our team treat the full range of hip and knee conditions allowing us to customize the fellowships to a degree in order to provide an optimal experience suited to the successful applicants needs. The fellowship provide solid grounding in primary hip and knee arthroplasty as well as exposure to complex revision surgery including; peri-prosthetic fracture management, multi-stage revision and massive endo-prosthetic replacement. There is also scope for training in other aspects of hip and knee surgery including ligament reconstruction and hip arthroscopy

The positions provides a mixture of supervised and independent practice to prepare the fellows for independent consultant practice with a specialist interest in hip and knee surgery furthermore; we offer the opportunity to participate in consultant level on-call where appropriate at Whipps Cross Hospital. The fellows are integral members of the team involved in day to day care of patient in clinics, theatre and on the wards. The successful applicant(s) will work closely with all the consultants in the department, Mr Millington will act as the educational supervisor and the whole team will assist in mentoring. The fellowship has an excellent record of helping the applicants directly move on to substantive consultant posts.

Main duties of the job

General Duties

1.Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in the lower limb orthopaedic surgery service, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

2.Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinicians and General Managers for Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery.

3.Development of his/her own interests within the specialty complementary to the existing subspecialties of the lower limb orthopaedic consultants, including active participation in research programmes.

4.Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient trauma and orthopaedic surgical service.

2.To provide evidence-based care for all inpatients and outpatients and to work flexibly to the prescribed rota to support the service, including inpatient and outpatient duties.

3.To have regard at all times to the clinical and quality standards set out in the NHS Plan, Your Guide to the NHS, and purchaser agreements.

4.To participate fully in the management of the Department and to liaise closely with the Lead Clinicians for Orthopaedics and Trauma and General Managers.

5.The post will involve regular Saturday lists for which a compensatory day off will be provided in the week.

6.The post holder will run independent clinics and lists in lower limb arthroplasty but also have access to joint clinics and lists with the consultants for complex cases.

7.The post holder will join the Consultant on-call rota for T&O at Whipps Cross Hospital.

8.The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

9.The duties outlined are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service requiring the post holder to be cooperative and flexible.

Essential criteria

Completed training in Trauma and Orthopaedics (e.g. post-CCT) Teaching undergraduates and postgraduates

Desirable criteria

Experience at consultant level working in a major trauma centre Fellowship training in Arthroplasty Surgery

Full GMC Registration with current licence to practice The candidate should be on the GMC specialist register or within 6-months of obtaining this. Evidence of participation in research (peer reviewed publications etc.) Relevant Fellowship training
