Birmingham, United Kingdom Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job summary

Are you a compassionate and committed psychologist who champions inclusivity and making healthcare more psychologically-informed? Would you like to join our service to help facilitate coping and adjustment to the impact of intestinal failure and parenteral nutrition on mental health and wellbeing ? Our current post holder is retiring and so we have an opportunity for a Practitioner Psychologist to join our Clinical Health Psychology service based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be joining a small, friendly and research-active multi-disciplinary Intestinal Failure team who work with both in- and out-patients. The psychological assessment and therapy work is very varied and there is the opportunity for research, to provide psychology consultation sessions and to contribute to pathway development. In addition, there is a national network of psychologists working in Intestinal Failure.

You will be a valued colleague in our Clinical Health Psychology service and as part of our Psychological Professionals workforce at Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

If you thrive on challenge, creativity and a dynamic and supportive work environment, in which psychological thinking is highly valued in the wider multi-disciplinary teams, along with the opportunity to shape the future of the service, this is the job for you.

Main duties of the job

You will need to be able to demonstrate an interest and thoughtfulness regarding the psychological impact of intestinal failure and parenteral nutrition on lifestyles and how pre-existing vulnerabilities may impact upon this. Some of our patients have, or develop, disordered eating. You will have experience in working with patients with physical health conditions, including in physical health ward settings. You will be working closely with doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to provide high quality care, and you will need strong skills in consultation, supervision and teaching as part of our multidisciplinary teamwork. You will be encouraged to offer placements to trainee and student psychologists.

This role will require face-to-face work, as well as skills in being able to deliver psychological assessment, interventions and teaching in a variety of formats, including via the telephone and video link.

There is tremendous scope for further psychologist posts to be developed across Gastroenterology and you would be involved in the service expansion.

Our mission is to provide excellent psychological care and support for patients and staff, which is compassionate, inclusive and committed.
