Job summary

My University Hospitals Sussex (MUHS) supports the hospitals and healthcare facilities for patients across Sussex and specialist care to some parts of Kent and Surrey. It raises, manages and distributes funds on behalf of UHSussex and operates under corporate trusteeship, with a Charitable Funds Committee (CFC) overseeing the operation of the charity.

As the Charity enters a new era with an ambitious capital development plan for the future, the Trust wishes to increase charitable income through the establishment of a new Fundraising Manager to increase income into the MUHS funds.

The post of Fundraising Manager is an important position which links the hospital charity, the Trust and the local community. The post holder will require extensive knowledge of fundraising and considerable energy and enthusiasm to inspire visitors, patients and others to choose MUHS as their preferred charity to support.

The purpose of this role is to ensure that fundraising ideas and events are in place that have high impact and will generate funds to agreed targets. The post holder will go out into the community to create a network with groups and individuals, offering high quality fundraising options and lifting the profile of the charity. Working closely with community groups, the ideal candidate will have an outgoing personality, keen for direct contact with people, be good at motivating and be self-confident as well as a self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision.

Main duties of the job

Initiate, develop and implement the Fundraising strategy and plan for the Charity

Lead, promote and co-ordinate fundraising events and activities, ensuring that sponsorship funds are processed effectively and events are well planned, marketed and supported and comply with Health & Safety standards

Nurture relationships with hospital staff to encourage creation of and participation in fundraising activities and events and lifting the profile of the charity internally

Define and lead the campaigns strategy to create special campaigns or appeals to raise awareness to a range of community audiences to boost profile

Assist or delegate for the Head of Fundraising and Communications (as required) to attend regional and local fundraising events, as developed by the Charity and aligned Charities. Other activities as leader of the wider fundraising team to encourage donations and develop greater volunteers support

The Charity Fundraising Manager is responsible for line managing the following staff:

Special Projects Fundraiser - Band 6

Community & Events Fundraiser - Band 5

Public & Mass Fundraiser - Band 5

Fundraising

Initiate, develop and implement the Fundraising strategy and plan for the Charity

Recruit, supervise and manage volunteers ensuring that their activities are compliant with fundraising practice and any legal frameworks

Develop and train key volunteers capable of taking on a more active role

Identify, recruit and lead senior Charity ambassadors from across the Trust

Communication

Initiate, develop and cultivate long term relationships with local charitable groups Leagues of Friends and other Charities working with the Hospital with the aim of ensuring that the Charitys plans are understood and aligned with those of partner Charities

Accountable for maintaining a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to create the Charity Community (supporters, volunteers, donor, ambassadors etc.) for appropriate engagement with the different constituents

Define and provide regular reports about fundraising activity, performance, supporters, donor, volunteers and events

Define and manage messaging for local newspapers and radio, with prior agreement, to maximise publicity and awareness of the charity and any local fundraising activities

Ownership for ensuring the plans and projects of the Charity are presented effectively, and are accessible to staff and the public, including opportunities for targeted charitable giving

Develop and manage social media feeds identify new digital opportunities

Define, create and manage Donor communications and thank you letters as appropriate

Responsible for creating compelling presentations to influence at the senior level and gain buy in to diverse fundraising activity to drive higher levels of income

Motivate and persuade broadly across the Trust to drive broad involvement in fundraising activity to create a culture of awareness and support for MUHS

Administrative donor management

Gather, consolidate and capture all supporter information and maintain accurate records of these

Ensure that accurate and up to date donor records are maintained and are accessible, especially with regard to input on to the database of all donor donations and activity

Ensure that all data is handled confidentially and with regard to the Data Protection Act, especially records relating to donors and volunteers

Management and Leadership

Participate in development of overall MUHS Strategies & objectives and lead the annual fundraising budgets, targets and planning process as agreed by the Charitable Funds Committee

Define and deliver MUHS Fundraising strategy and plan and drive awareness and acceptance of it across the Trust

Assist or delegate for the Head of Fundraising and Communications (as required) to attend regional and local fundraising events, as developed by the Charity and aligned Charities. Other activities as leader of the wider fundraising team to encourage donations and develop greater volunteers support

As owner of the fundraising budget, accountable for delivery within it and purchasing in accordance with Trust guidelines

Develop and establish and own best practice guidelines in donor engagement and management across the Trust working with key stakeholders

Develop relationships with community based groups, including Leagues of Friends and other groups faith groups and schools to be the face of MUHS with such organisations

Establish a policy of acceptance of gifts based on best practice

Responsible for the line management of Fundraising staff including all aspects of effective people management (where appropriate)

Develop and maintain schedule of charitable and fund-raising activity and accountable for publicity of fundraising activities

Active participation in team meetings to drive performance and improvement

Ensure appropriate and effective use of Charity resources

Audit and Research

Extensive research into the development of fundraising events including best practice and options for venues, attendees, collections, approaches etc

Effective monitoring of the local charity environment and a visible presence within the community

Carry our regular research via the internet regarding changes in FOI legislation, ICO guidance and decisions, and FOI information released by other organisations

Be familiar with the Institute of Fundraising Code of Practice and other legislation including Health and Safety with regard to the fundraising activities undertaken

Adhere to all Charity policies & procedures and comply with Charity Commission guidelines at all times

Learning and Development

Attend mandatory training updates as required.

Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process.

Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.

Identify own learning needs and jointly plan training requirements with your line manager
