Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a full-time Band 6 Pharmacy Technician to join the Oncology and Haematology Pharmacy team.. The post holder will be based in the Colney Centre and provide a clinical pharmacy service to Weybourne Day Unit and Mulbarton Ward. This is a unique development aimed at increasing the skill mix within the team and developing a sustainable pharmacy workforce within a rapidly expanding field.

The Pharmacy Department provides a fully comprehensive pharmaceutical service across the Trust and to a number of external community units. We are a large and very busy department with over 180 members of staff including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy assistants and admin and clerical staff. There are many varied roles and we all work as a team to provide the different functions and services whilst maintaining a high level of patient care.

Functions of the Pharmacy Department include the ordering, receipt and supply of medicines to wards and departments throughout the Trust/external units. This includes dispensing for inpatients, outpatients, community units and supplying ward stocks averaging around 2,500 items a day. Wards and external units are provided with a clinical service, with pharmacists and pharmacy technicians an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. The pharmacy provides Aseptic Services such as the preparation and supply of chemotherapy and other sterile products.

Main duties of the job

You will implement and maintain an advanced clinical technical service to the Trust in particular the clinical verification of specific Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT). Further responsibilities will include supporting the Oncology and Haematology pharmacy service in dealing with technical and clinical queries from the multidisciplinary team, wider pharmacy department and patients, completing drug histories for ward patients and building chemotherapy regimens on the electronic chemotherapy prescribing system (ARIA). Future opportunities may also arise to write and develop SACT treatment protocols and policies and explore the potential for pharmacy technician roles within treatment specific clinics.

You will also be the specialist technical lead within the team to help oversee the safe and efficient supply of oral and subcutaneous SACT dispensed by the Oncology and Haematology team.

To support 7 day working all staff are required to work 1 in 10 weekends with corresponding time off given during the week. All staff are required to undertake at least one bank holiday duty per year. All rotas are subject to review at any time.

Job responsibilities

1. To undertake the clinical verification of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT) and supportive treatments in accordance with the British Oncology Pharmacy Association "Standards for the Pharmacy Verification of Prescriptions for Cancer Medicines" and with clearly defined remit or practice, without a pharmacist second check.

2. To maintain and build new and existing SACT regimens on ARIA and ensure new drugs are added and available on JAC and regimens are added to the CASPER SACT referral system.

3. To ensure the hospital formulary, in line with trust medicines management policy, other trust policies and guidelines is adhered to.

4. To contribute to the implementation and writing of SACT Treatment Protocols for Oncology and Haematology.

5. To contribute to the implementation and writing of Standard Operating Procedures accompanying the Clinical technical services.
