Clinical Fellow in Public Health

This post is a 12 Month Fixed Term / Secondment position

About the Organisation:

Public Health Scotland is an organisation between the Scottish Government and Local Government, working in partnership, to provide leadership to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of the people of Scotland.

Public Health Scotland launched 1st April 2020 with the formal status of a National Special Health Board employing around 1100 people, With an annual budget of around £60 million, Public Health Scotland provides authoritative information and services to support people and communities across Scotland. It leads the national response to unforeseen health emergencies and contributes to national and local government policy through its provision of robust data and intelligence.

The Post:

We are looking for a junior doctor, who has recently completed or about to finish UK Foundation Training Programme, or equivalent, to gain experience within the field of Public Health. This would include possible experience within the three 'domains' of Public Health at a national level- Health Protection, Health Improvement and Healthcare Public Health.

This will be an opportunity for the post holder to gain insights into how Public Health operates at a national level. They will have the opportunity to gain career development experience in research or leadership projects in line with the Directorate objectives.

You will be joining teams embedded within the NHS, but working closely with Community Planning Partnerships, Local Authority, Integrated Health and Social Care Partnerships, third sector, resilience partnerships and others.

The post will report directly to a Consultant in Public Health Medicine / Consultant in Public Health.

The Candidate:

The post holder must be registered on the Register of the General Medical Council with a license to practice.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure Scotland check. Any candidate who has lived/worked overseas for more than 12 months in the preceding 5 years will also be required to provide a criminal record check from the appropriate overseas agency.

Candidates must have current GMC registration at the time of applying.

Location and Working Pattern:

Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Central Quay, Glasgow.

Please note that PHS will be relocating from Central Quay, Glasgow to Bothwell Street, Glasgow in September 2024.

Currently hybrid working.

The work pattern for this post is Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week however PHS supports flexible working and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns.

During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
