We are looking for a skilled Acupuncturist to work as a Clinic Supervisor in our teaching clinic on Mondays and/or Saturdays. You will join a committed and experienced team of supervisors and will work directly with students (normally in groups of up to six) and patients in the acupuncture teaching clinic at the College. It is a rewarding role, with the privilege of helping students to develop into capable, independent practitioners.

We’re a small and friendly independent College based in York City Centre with an excellent reputation for training practitioners in the UK and beyond.  We offer a BSc degree in Acupuncture and MScs in Nutrition and Chinese Herbal Medicine. We have run an acupuncture course since 1988 and offered the BSc in Acupuncture since 2008. It is accredited by the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board and validated by the University College of Osteopathy. Due to expansion, we're opening clinical teaching facilities in Cheshire and London (these are in addition to our main clinic in York).

The Vacancy:

This role is providing excellent teaching and supervision to students throughout their three-year degree course. Availability to cover other days of the week when there’s sickness or holiday would be very welcome. 

Our ideal candidate:

Essential:

  • Educated to undergraduate or post-graduate degree or equivalent in acupuncture
  • Is a member of the British Acupuncture Council
  • Has at least three years' Clinical Practice experience
  • Has the ability to plan, manage and organise their own teaching contributions
  • Is able to resolve and make decisions about student suitability in line with professional standards
  • Will contribute to management and administrative processes
  • Works effectively in a team, understanding the strengths and areas of development for others within the team
  • Communicates new and complex information effectively, both verbally and in writing, engaging the interest and enthusiasm of the target audience
  • Works proactively with colleagues in College
  • Has a positive student-centred approach
  • Is comfortable using (and familiar with) the Microsoft Office suite of programs, especially Outlook, Word and Teams
  • Able to manage a diary and online note-keeping

Desirable:

  • Postgrad degree 
  • PGCert HE
  • Has five years' clinical practice experience
  • Previous experience of managing and delivering educational courses
  • Engagement in research or scholarly activity, or in the development of an area of clinical expertise
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience of clinical supervision to be able to teach and supervise at undergraduate and masters level
  • Experience of teaching
  • Experience of Shen Hammer Pulse diagnosis
  • Ability to make appropriate contribution to the College’s clinical outcomes research
  • Experience of mentoring / supervising practice

Job Type: Part-time, employed.

Number of hours: 7.5 hours per week.

Hours of work: 8:45am - 5:15pm every Monday and/or every Saturday (with a 1hr unpaid break from 1-2pm)

Salary: £38,007.80* per year pro rata (this is the full-time figure, based on a full-time position being 36hrs per week).

Pay scale: 20* (£20.30 per hour) plus overtime as agreed.

*The probationary period (first six months in post), is paid at pay scale 19 which is £19.60 per hour / £36,698.39 per year pro rata.

Reporting to: Clinic Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the treatment of all patients by students to ensure excellence in patient care and the safety of patients. If students numbers are low, you will be required to treat patients directly.
  • Take responsibility for the supervision of students in the teaching clinic, providing a supportive learning environment which enables the development of competent and professional practitioners whilst safeguarding both patients and students.
  • Take responsibility for student assessments and reviews as agreed with the Clinic Director, and maintain accurate student records.
  • Ensure clinical outcomes research data gathered and recorded, contribute to other research undertaken in the clinic and promote awareness of the role of research in relation to clinical practice.
  • Ensure the smooth running of the clinic and undertake administrative tasks as necessary, including rebooking appointments, making appropriate referrals and responding to complaints.
  • Attend clinic supervisors’ team meetings, once per month on a Sunday morning 9-10am on Microsoft Teams (paid overtime).
  • Attend three in-person meetings per year (Feb, June and Oct), on a Sunday, 9am–1pm, held at NCA in York (paid overtime).
  • Attend other meetings and development events as required (paid overtime).
  • Have an understanding of how students are taught and ensure that only the practices that are taught in the college are the ones practiced in the clinic.
  • Provide timely and appropriate support to recent graduates of the college.
  • Report to and liaise with the Clinic Director to ensure the smooth running of the Clinical Modules.
  • Assist the Clinic Director and Course Director in the maintenance of accreditation and validation of the course.
  • Participate in the College’s Performance Review Programme.
  • Provide timely and appropriate support to recent graduates of the college, as required
  • Other duties as required.
