University Hospitals of Derby and Burton are seeking a cultural safety midwife who willwork to reduce inequality in maternity outcomes and experiences of Black, Asian and other women from an Ethnic Minority background and those from the most deprived decile, through engagement and co-production with other members of the maternity and multidisciplinary team, community groups and service users representing these populations.
In addition, the post holder will engage with the Trust EDI team and patient experience team to improve care for LGBTQ+ people and people living with disability and act as a resource for staff.
Main duties of the job
This role will provide and promote high quality, individualised, safe, evidenced based maternity care and promote the importance of Cultural Safety in reducing inequality in maternity services, including liaising with senior leaders in all areas within the directorate.
The post holder will work with community groups and the multi-agency team to ensure that women from ethnic minority groups and those from the most deprived deciles have access to care appropriate to their needs. They will act as a role model by applying best practice in motivating staff to drive improvements and provide visible leadership in the workplace.
The cultural safety midwife will lead on the benchmarking of national evidence-based and expert panel reports relevant to cultural safety issues and the needs of LGBTQ+ people and people living with disability to ensure that maternity services provide best practice. They will implement, maintain and promote solutions and equipment for women with interpreting needs to improve safety and quality of experience for women with additional language needs.

We provide antenatal and postnatal care for 11,500 women each year and, at RDH, we offer an alongside birth centre. We support women through low and high-risk care pathways, and some specialty pathways like diabetes and cardiology.

We have three wards across two sites, with a total of 88 beds for antenatal, postnatal and induction of labour.
At Royal Derby Hospital there are:
17 delivery rooms including one pool room and bereavement suite. Four bedded Midwife led birth centre. Four bedded Obstetric Enhanced Care area and a two bedded assessment bayQueens Hospital Burton has seven delivery rooms including one pool room and one bereavement suite.
Samuel Johnson Community Hospital is currently does not provide intrapartum care but runs as a community midwifery hub.

We are focused on making progress in achieving compliance with the immediate and essential actions from Ockenden recommendations, as well as implementing valuable learning from recent external reviews and reports into the service.

Make sure we communicate well with families, so that every woman feels properly listened to and that we act on their feedback.
