Job summary
Thisis a 12-month clinical trust grade post in Leeds Teaching Hospitals commencingAugust 2024 and designed to provide comprehensive experience in all aspects ofcritical care medicine. This post is suitable for applicants wishing to gain ordevelop their experience in Intensive Care Medicine. Typical applicantsundertake this position with a view to gaining experience in ICM whilstconsidering their career preferences in either anaesthesia, emergency medicine,or the acute medical specialties.
St Jamess University Hospital provides acute medicaland surgical services to the population of Leeds, and tertiary services for alarge surrounding population. The successful applicants will join an existingteam of Acute Common Stem and Anaesthetic trainees on the rota. There isextensive support from the 16 Critical Care Consultants and this post providesan excellent environment to experience a complex, diverse and busy intensivecare environment. There is also occasional potential to cover shifts at LeedsGeneral Infirmary, which is a regional centre for Cardiac and NeurologicalSurgery, a Major Trauma centre and a centre for interventional cardiology.
Main duties of the job
1.To work with other critical care colleagues in the provision of acomprehensive
critical care service to Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust.
2.To develop and / or consolidate expertise and experience in intensive care
medicine.
3.To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes in
clinical practice and new technologiesavailable.
4.To participate in and progress Clinical Governance.
5.To develop specialised areas of interest eg Simulation, Teaching and
Research.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
General Training and Qualifications
Theappointee must have full registration with the General Medical Council and haveas a minimum completed Foundation Year Training, or equivalent, post basicMedical qualification. Applicants mustprovide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant RoyalCollege at the time of application, in order for their application to beprogressed further.
Experience
Theappointee must have sufficient experience that they are able to competentlymanage the acutely deteriorating patient who requires intensive care support.This includes management of the airway of an unconscious patient
.
Research
Althoughthis is a clinical post, the appointee will have the opportunity to activelyparticipate in research projects. All main Anaesthetic and Intensive CareMedicine journals are available in the Hospital Library. The involvement oftrainees in research is encouraged and supervision is provided. PC access andother support is also available.
Personal Attributes
Theappointee will have excellent communication skills in both written and oralEnglish, and be able to work effectively as part of a team. They will have anunderstanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of the responsibilitiesthat a clinical fellow post brings.

Inthe discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected tomaintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuingmedical education.
4. TEACHING
TheTrust as a Teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with theUniversity of Leeds School of Medicine for the Undergraduate teaching and allClinical fellow and medical staff are required to provide an appropriatecontribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.
Thepost holder will be required to participate in the informal teaching of medicalstudents, nurses and operating department practitioners/assistants.
Thepost holder will have access to the Trusts extensive and spacious library inthe Clinical Sciences Building that houses approximately 5,500 books andseveral hundred journals. Staff in this library will also arrange loans ofbooks etc. from the Medical School Library and the National Lending Librarybased at Boston Spa.

Thispost is designed to provide clinical service to, and experience in, IntensiveCare Medicine, primarily in St Jamess University Hospital, Leeds.Opportunities may be available to cover shifts at Leeds General Infirmary,where appropriate.
Objective
Thepost should attract those wanting to specialise in anaesthesia or ICM and itwill provide extensive experience in ICM for a wide range of medical andsurgical specialties. It will also give significant opportunities for clinicalaudit and research.

Criticalcare in SJUH is provided in two areas: a 23-bedded ICU and a 16-bedded ICU.Duties include the management of all aspects of patient care in the criticalcare environment, as part of a team comprising trainees in anaesthesia and ICM,core trainees from other acute specialties, advanced nurse practitioners andconsultants. Qualifications
Essential
Basic Medical Qualification (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent). Full GMC Registration. Post Foundation Training or equivalent.

Evidence of career interest in ICM or allied specialty. Sufficient experience in diagnosis and provision of basic initial management of the acutely deteriorating patient. ALS, ATLS or equivalent.
