This is a 12-month clinical trust grade post in Leeds Teaching Hospitals commencing August 2024 and designed to provide comprehensive experience in all aspects of critical care medicine. This post is suitable for applicants wishing to gain or develop their experience in Intensive Care Medicine. Typical applicants undertake this position with a view to gaining experience in ICM whilst considering their career preferences in either anaesthesia, emergency medicine, or the acute medical specialties.

St James's University Hospital provides acute medical and surgical services to the population of Leeds, and tertiary services for a large surrounding population. The successful applicants will join an existing team of Acute Common Stem and Anaesthetic trainees on the rota. There is extensive support from the 16 Critical Care Consultants and this post provides an excellent environment to experience a complex, diverse and busy intensive care environment. There is also occasional potential to cover shifts at Leeds General Infirmary, which is a regional centre for Cardiac and Neurological Surgery, a Major Trauma centre and a centre for interventional cardiology.

Main duties of the job

1. To work with other critical care colleagues in the provision of a comprehensive

critical care service to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

2. To develop and / or consolidate expertise and experience in intensive care

medicine.

3. To support service plans for the specialty, taking account of the changes in

clinical practice and new technologies available.

4. To participate in and progress Clinical Governance.

5. To develop specialised areas of interest eg Simulation, Teaching and

Research.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

3.1 General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must have full registration with the General Medical Council and have as a minimum completed Foundation Year Training, or equivalent, post basic Medical qualification. Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.

3.2 Experience

The appointee must have sufficient experience that they are able to competently manage the acutely deteriorating patient who requires intensive care support. This includes management of the airway of an unconscious patient

.

3.3 Research

Although this is a clinical post, the appointee will have the opportunity to actively participate in research projects. All main Anaesthetic and Intensive Care Medicine journals are available in the Hospital Library. The involvement of trainees in research is encouraged and supervision is provided. PC access and other I.T. support is also available.

3.4 Personal Attributes

The appointee will have excellent communication skills in both written and oral English, and be able to work effectively as part of a team. They will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of the responsibilities that a clinical fellow post brings.

3.5 Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following (e.g.):-

Mortality and morbidity meetings

Clinical audit

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines

Simulation in Critical Care

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

4. TEACHING

The Trust as a Teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds School of Medicine for the Undergraduate teaching and all Clinical fellow and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post holder will be required to participate in the informal teaching of medical students, nurses and operating department practitioners/assistants.

The post holder will have access to the Trusts extensive and spacious library in the Clinical Sciences Building that houses approximately 5,500 books and several hundred journals. Staff in this library will also arrange loans of books etc. from the Medical School Library and the National Lending Library based at Boston Spa.

5. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

Aim

This post is designed to provide clinical service to, and experience in, Intensive Care Medicine, primarily in St James's University Hospital, Leeds. Opportunities may be available to cover shifts at Leeds General Infirmary, where appropriate.

Objective

The post should attract those wanting to specialise in anaesthesia or ICM and it will provide extensive experience in ICM for a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. It will also give significant opportunities for clinical audit and research.

Summary of post

Critical care in SJUH is provided in two areas: a 23-bedded ICU and a 16-bedded ICU. Duties include the management of all aspects of patient care in the critical care environment, as part of a team comprising trainees in anaesthesia and ICM, core trainees from other acute specialties, advanced nurse practitioners and consultants. A wide case-mix of patients is admitted to critical care in SJUH:

Qualifications
Essential

Basic Medical Qualification (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent). Full GMC Registration. Post Foundation Training or equivalent.

Desirable

Primary FRCA or equivalent.

Experience
Essential

Evidence of career interest in ICM or allied specialty. Sufficient experience in diagnosis and provision of basic initial management of the acutely deteriorating patient. ALS, ATLS or equivalent.

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
Essential

Well-organised and skilled in time management. Effective interpersonal skills, including excellent communication skills in written and oral English Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
