JOB SUMMARY

The Advanced Polymer Technologies business is the market leader in Caprolactone and Polycaprolactone products globally. The business is geographically balanced. Our products go into a very diverse set of applications such as Polyurethane Materials, Adhesives & Sealants, Coatings, Polymer additives and Bioplastics that are used for end markets such as Industrial equipment, Automotive, Footwear, Consumer packaging, Electronic devices, Medical and Furniture. The performance characteristics of the Capa chemistry provides unique properties in our targeted end markets that allow both us and our customers to differentiate through innovative new products.

Reporting to the R&D Manager, the R&D Development Chemist will be part of a dynamic team executing novel research and development activities that feed the new product development pipeline. The core focus will be to push the performance boundaries of Caprolactone chemistry in current applications but also to evaluate options to move into new chemistries, new applications and new markets.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Support and seek to improve high laboratory standards of safety and housekeeping in accordance with local, site and legal requirements (including REACH, COSHH) to ensure that a safe working environment is maintained. Ensure that all activities are performed according to the EHSQ system of the Innovation department and Warrington site. Ensure that all necessary EHSQ documents are maintained and revised when needed

INNOVATION

Innovation is the key growth lever for the APT business of Ingevity and the main driver for securing our future business. Within this function the job holder should:

Be technical lead for product development in support of ADTS and R&D platform projects. Plan and conduct experimental programs related to the synthesis and development of new polymer materials and products. Conduct laboratory and pilot plant experimentation, working in collaboration with other team members as necessary Record all experimental information in laboratory notebooks. Analyse the results to make conclusions and suggest recommendations in a formal report. Use gated process to run R&D projects and collaborate with R&D Manager to prepare necessary documentation to report out to the Portfolio Team Participate in Market Development teams to keep up to date on market requirements Prepare monthly reports and periodic review reports Liaise with Cross functional Ingevity personnel within sales, technical, operational and supply chain functions as required Acquire knowledge and keep up to date with the developments in the field of polymer technology related to polyurethanes technology for job performance and personal improvement. Identify, propose and evaluate innovative ideas for new product and process development. Identify opportunities for improvement in the department work processes using a CI methodology Participate in the IP strategy of the business, using their knowledge and experience to support patent filing as an inventor or co-owner as appropriate.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

If supervising Chemists or Technicians, the job holder should:

Guide and coach lab personnel under the supervision of the job holder Encourage a sense of ownership of work and processes to those being supervised Encourage a collaborative work ethic within the Innovation team

ADMINISTRATION

As well as for IP and good technical record keeping the job holder is responsible to:

Protect confidentiality of information related to work within the company such that no unauthorized person can gain access. Comply with company IT and legal policies Ensure that all work carried out is recorded in the appropriate format and filed in the appropriate manner in order to ensure traceability.

Authority

To plan and execute work tasks as defined under responsibilities to ensure their execution To procure laboratory chemicals up to pilot plant quantities and supplies from suppliers as required Equipment purchasing recommendations to line manager Ability to make informed decisions related to experimental work undertaken

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

BSC or higher in Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or Chemical Engineering 3-5 years industrial laboratory experience with a track record of increasing responsibility Demonstrated expertise in polymer synthesis A strong working knowledge of analytical chemistry, polymer physical testing and thermal analysis methods Practical knowledge of laboratory safety principles especially in conducting risk analyses and assessing hazardous chemicals (REACH, COSHH). Knowledgeable in Design of experiments and statistical analysis Basic project management skills
