This post in paediatric palliative care is suitable for trainees wishing to gain experience in paediatric palliative medicine, for those wishing to pursue a career in Tertiary Paediatric palliative medicine, or as a stand -alone post providing training for generalists with a specialist interest.

Main duties of the job

The Children’s and Young People’s Unit of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, Sutton is based in an internationally renowned cancer centre; has excellent integration with all adult oncology specialities and enjoys the significant benefits of co-location with The Institute of Cancer Research. The on-site radiotherapy facilities have undergone extensive expansion. The clinical oncology service for children and young people with malignancy has a very high international reputation and has an established record in innovative radiotherapy techniques. The Children’s and Young People’s Unit has an excellent, well established paediatric palliative care service.

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and St Georges Hospital form a unified, integrated paediatric oncology centre for children with malignancy south of the Thames. The Royal Marsden Hospital provides cancer diagnosis, cancer treatment expertise, psycho-social support and non-surgical cancer therapy and St George’s Hospital provides paediatric specialist services, including paediatric intensive care, paediatric surgery, neuro-surgery and paediatric infectious disease specialist care. Paediatric Palliative care provides palliation and symptom support across the entire service including tertiary hospitals (Royal Marsden and St George’s Hospital), shared care hospitals and community services including into the hospice and home.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will gain specialist Paediatric Palliative care experience across clinical settings developing skills in pain and symptom management, advance communication and advance care planning.

The post will offer experience in:

Paediatric Palliative Oncology care involving both children and young people in a specialist paediatric Oncology tertiary service (Royal Marsden and St George’s hospital) Experience in specialist non-oncology paediatric palliative care through Children Hospice care (Shooting star children’s Hospice)

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria

Eligible for registration with the GMC MB BS (or equivalent) MRCPCH or equivalent

Desirable criteria

Other degrees eg BSc, BA or equivalent honours degree

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria

A minimum of 2 years as Paediatric ST2-3 equivalent posts of which 1 year in UK/Ireland Some experience in Paediatric Subspecialties with close Palliative care links e.g. neurodisability, PICU, Neurology, metabolic, oncology Overseas posts must be recognised training posts in country of origin as vetted by the Higher Specialist Training Office at the RCPCH – evidence to be submitted with application form. Overseas trainees need to have written references that their jobs are thus approved by the national training programme / college
