Working with staff and volunteers, you’ll be making a vital contribution to the Trust’s cause of protecting and caring for places so that people and nature can thrive – now and into the future.

Interviews: 5 September 2024

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Senior Collections & House Officer, you will work as part of a small group of deeply committed House staff as well as a large and very active volunteer cohort at Polesden lacey. The house is an exciting place to be, with exhibitions, a large Christmas offer as well as an internationally recognised collection. The last owner Margaret Greville was a prominent Edwardian society hostess as well as knowledgeable collector of paintings, ceramics and objets d’art and visitors enjoy hearing stories of the parties held here and stories of the collection. Our volunteers play an important part telling these stories and you will be a key contact for our 350 House volunteers including Room guides, Tour guides and Pianists. You’ll lead the daily volunteer briefings and be their main contact whilst they are onsite.

You'll be working some public holidays and you’ll work one weekend in three as part of a rota. Some flexibility will be required to help cover annual leave and the very occasional evening events.

What you'll be doing

In this visitor facing role, you'll help to manage the house volunteers, creating a warm and welcoming environment for them. You’ll lead the daily volunteer briefings, sorting out the rotas and helping with queries. Supporting the Senior Collections and House Officer you’ll help induct and support new volunteers, checking in with them and helping run training sessions. As part of the House Team you’ll get involved with the operations of the house helping with opening and closing and some of the daily housekeeping tasks. You'll also be part of the wider team of employees and volunteers, helping to cover where necessary.
