Job summary

Our Adult Inpatient General and Specialist Medical Ward areas are now recruiting we have opportunities based at St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey, this includes care of elderly, medical short stay, stroke ward and other medical specialities such as respiratory and cardiology.

We are seeking individuals that can work a range of shifts which will include a varied shift pattern of long days, nights, weekends, and public holidays.

We welcome applications from those new to care and experienced health care support workers and there is a comprehensive four-week induction and training programme.

You must have good communication skills, have competent IT skills, and have a kind, caring and compassionate nature.

Our HCSWs are at the heart of delivering a high standard of patient care and will include various tasks such as supporting patients with meeting their hygiene needs, maintaining adequate nutrition and hydration, and supporting patients with their mobility.

The Trust offers onwards training for HCSWs including working towards the Care Certificate and achieving the competencies required to gain Band 3 status, Maths and English qualifications and the opportunity after a minimum period of 12 months to apply for the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship which if successful leads to a role as a Registered Nursing Associate.

Main duties of the job

Our Healthcare Support Workers are at the heart of providing direct patient centred care, supporting the Registered Nurses and Nursing Associates as well as the wider Multi-Disciplinary Teams.

The role is varied, equally challenging and rewarding, where you will have the opportunity to really make a difference to the experience of our patients. This could be by supporting patients in their rehabilitation and recovery following an operation or a period of acute illness, caring for patients upon admission to hospital in a fast-paced environment supporting the medical and nursing teams or providing holistic and compassionate care for our more vulnerable patients or those at the end of their life.

Job responsibilities

Working as a Healthcare Support Worker in a ward / department within the hospital setting.

Carry out assigned tasks involved with direct patient care whilst maintaining the privacy and dignity of patients. This will be whilst demonstrating excellent care, compassion and communication, and in support of and supervised by a Registered Nurse or Nursing Associate, incorporating:

Continence Management Nutrition & Hydration Undertaking and recording of Vital Signs Moving & Handling of patients to support independence Infection Prevention and Control Safeguarding of adults and children. End of life and palliative care. Supporting patients with their hygiene needs Supporting patients with their communication Ensuring patients are involved in their care planning and decision making. Supporting patients living with dementia Supporting patients with a wide range of medical conditions such as asthma, COPD, following a stroke, cardiac related health conditions, diabetes, Maintaining a safe environment Falls prevention. Pressure area care.
