Job summary

We are looking for a Senior Band 6 or progression Band 5/6 Occupational Therapist Occupational Therapist to join our expanding Orthopaedic OT Team predominantly in the new elective unit (NANOC), Cringleford Ward plus involvement with Pre-operative assessments. There will also be occasions to work on the Orthopaedic Trauma wards. There will be opportunities to work with the Orthopaedic Therapy Assistant Practitioners and co-ordinate their case load, alongside the Orthopaedic Physiotherapists.

There will be scope for Service developments within the new NANOC Units, adhering to current research and Trust guidelines.

The Band 5/6 post provides an excellent opportunity for occupational therapists to continue broadening their skills and to develop greater knowledge & skill.

You will be involved with students, developing and promoting competencies for OT assistants and Therapy Assistant practitioners and MDT members.

The Occupational Therapy service at NNUH has over 90 members of staff committed to providing a high- quality patient care across all specialisms. Main duties of the job

As an autonomous practitioner, you will:

independently carry out specialised assessment and appropriate intervention for elective and trauma patients incorporating physical, personal and psychological needs in relation to self-care, leisure and productivity assess risks relating to the discharge process to ensure a safe and timely discharge of patients to the most appropriate setting, in line with new NANOC discharge pathways. provide advice and information to patients/carers including instruction and training regarding use of equipment issued. carry out day to day supervision/ co-ordinating of qualified and unqualified staff across the Orthopaedic elective unit. to record In-patient intervention daily into IT systems: For example: Tracker, Patient Handover.

Job responsibilities

To maintain a high standard of professional practice, working within the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of your own work including accountability for the management of patients in your care as an autonomous practitioner To have knowledge of evidence as a base for practice, participate in service / multidisciplinary audit and research within the clinical area and use knowledge gained to achieve optimum outcomes for Occupational Therapy. To prioritise own caseload To independently carry out specialised assessment and appropriate intervention for patients with complex needs incorporating personal, psychological and spiritual needs in relation to self-care, leisure and productivity. To contribute to the differential diagnosis of complex patients through functional and cognitive assessments and determine treatment interventions based on this To assess risks relating to the discharge process to ensure a safe and timely discharge of patients to the most appropriate setting. To manage challenging situations including emotional, verbal and physical conflicts and understand own need for support To overcome barriers and communicate sensitive information effectively with patients and carers/family. This requires the use of appropriate specialist communication skills of negotiation, motivation, explanation and the gaining of informed/implied consent. To communicate with multidisciplinary /outside agencies and arrange appropriate follow up to provide a flexible seamless service.
