Working in the Collections Services department and reporting to the Paper Conservation Manager, the Conservation Technician, Paper and Textiles will provide technical expertise in the mounting, framing, storage and housing of works on paper, photographs, and library/archive collections and the framing of 2D textile objects. The role will be based with the Paper Conservation team at the museum’s (PPMCC) in Kidbrooke. The post holder will undertake conservation standard mounting of historic and contemporary works of art on paper, photographs, and archival material and provide technical expertise and conservation standard framing of works on paper, photographs and mounted 2D textile objects. They will be responsible for designing and creating bespoke paper/card cradles for the safe display of bound library and archive collections. The successful candidate will work closely with stores managers and art and object handlers to devise appropriate storage, housing and packing solutions for paper-based collections. They will be responsible for the safe operation and routine maintenance of the computerised mount cutter and use 3D modelling software to visualise designs. They will safely operate woodworking machinery for the manufacture of frame components and participate in routine cleaning and maintenance of the wood mill alongside wider teams.

The successful candidate will have a fine-art or technical qualification, or equivalent experience in a similar technical role. Experience of handling works of art on paper, photographs, and library/archive material, and of mounting and framing works on paper for display is essential. The candidate will have knowledge of the design and construction of different mounts, frames, supports and storage enclosures for works on paper, and will be competent using mount cutting machinery, including maintenance. Computer literacy with knowledge of Microsoft applications and 3D modelling software is essential, as is the ability to undertake manual handling work at height.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 6 – Management and Technical Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, working 5 days between the hours of 8am-4pm. On occasion, some flexibility may be required.
