About the School: This exceptional school serves 200 profoundly deaf children at its residential facility in Berkshire, where it takes pride in its pupils' achievements at GCSE, A Level, as well as in BTEC and Vocational Courses. The school offers the chance to teach highly motivated students in small classes, providing an opportunity to make a significant impact at this national centre of excellence for deaf education. No knowledge of sign language is required, as the school follows an auditory/oral philosophy.
Curriculum: The school currently follows a two-week timetable, consisting of 25 lessons of 1:05 each week. Computing is mandatory at KS3, where the National Curriculum is followed with one lesson per week. All students undertake Functional Skills IT in Year 10, unless they opt for GCSE Computing as one of their choices, in which case they receive five lessons per fortnight, plus one lesson per fortnight for Functional Skills.
At KS5, the school offers OCR Technical in ICT, with five lessons per week. Uptake in KS4 and KS5 is typically strong, with class sizes ranging from 4 to 8 students per cohort.
Resources: Apart from the Head of ICT, ICT lessons are delivered in three dedicated computer rooms. Each student has their own PC, and all rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. A full-time Network Manager and an IT Technician provide support across the organization.
The Role: The role is focused on ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in computing, as outlined in the curriculum, and in line with departmental and school policies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Promote excellence in teaching and learning to ensure all pupils reach their full potential and are prepared for life beyond school by achieving strong examination results.
- Demonstrate the skills of effective teaching and learning in practice, exemplifying the professional standards.
- Actively promote interest in computing beyond the classroom, both inside and outside of scheduled lessons.
- Encourage pupils' interest in the subject area by actively promoting the department within the school community.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school’s policies, practices, and procedures, supporting the school’s values and vision.
- Maintain good order and discipline among pupils, managing behaviour effectively to create a safe and productive learning environment.
