Job summary

This post is an exciting opportunity to join our Perinatal Education Team at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. This role would be ideal for an experienced, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable midwife who is passionate about education, training and supporting our newly qualified midwives during their transition from student midwife through to a Band 6 midwife.

The Preceptorship & Retention Lead Midwife will provide leadership, clinical support, effective communication, and pastoral support to ensure new midwives feel supported and empowered to provide exemplary maternity care. The role will involve tailoring and developing the preceptorship package to individual needs and working closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-based care, working flexibly across the whole Maternity Unit.

The role is split between 75% clinical duties and 25% non-clinical duties. The successful candidate will collaborate with the recruitment leads and matron team to identify how best to personalise their recruitment and retention data, and implement plans for improvement. They will offer career advice through the career hub and career conversations, supporting staff with their future development opportunities.

They will also act as an expert resource and be a positive role model providing sound professional knowledge and leadership to all members of the multidisciplinary team within the maternity service.

Main duties of the job

This role will be responsible for providing interventions for students, early and late careerprogression, and retention and requires the post holder to lead the induction, orientation, training, pastoral support, ongoing mentoring, and career progression for these role will enhance supernumerary support to newly qualified midwives and return to midwifery practice learners and will work closely with the Workforce Development & Education Lead for Maternity and Neonatal Services and Professional Midwifery Advocates to promote retention within the maternity workforce.

The successful candidate will promote an environment that encourages learning and sustains the personal and professional development of staff through career conversations, and careerdevelopment initiatives, with clinical, educational & pastoral successful candidate will collaborate with the recruitment leads and matron team to identify how best to personalise their recruitment and retention data and implement improvement will offer advice through the Retention and Recruitment National Team to support staff with their future career opportunities

Essential

Degree in Midwifery and Registered NMC Midwife Band 6 Midwifery experience Postgraduate diploma in education or equivalent training and experience

Desirable

Master's qualification or equivalent education at level 7 Leadership & Management Training

Experience

Essential

Experience in a variety of midwifery settings SSSA Practice Supervisor/Assessor Clinical and classroom-based education & a willingness to teach relevant courses, including PROMPT Experience in using and applying evidence in practice

Involvement in clinical practice development & education Research and audit experience Understanding of NHS overall key targets Knowledge and understanding of National & Local Midwifery Drivers in Education & Retention

Knowledge
