Acting Institute Manager

About the role
The post holder is the senior professional services manager for the Institute of Ophthalmology and is responsible for leading the professional services and technical operations of the Institute and supports the Institute’s Director in their role.
The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of efficient and effective services supporting teaching, research and enterprise activities, liaising with Faculty, School and UCL teams as appropriate.
Key responsibilities include management of the Institute’s budget, overseeing the approval of research grants and contract proposals, recruitment of staff and students, delivery of teaching and learning support, and management of space and other resources in line with UCL policies and procedures.
The post holder also supports the Director to develop and implement strategic plans, monitors the performance of the Institute and provides advice on strategic and institutional matters that impact on the Institute.
The post holder will promote good working practices throughout the Institute and will be responsible for taking the lead on developing and evolving relevant policies and procedures. The post holder will also be expected to play a lead role in new initiatives and activities at Faculty level.
This post is available from 15 October – 03 September and is open to external candidates on a fixed-term basis and to UCL internal candidates on a secondment basis. About you
The successful candidate will have a proven track record in a senior role in administration, operations and management within a higher education environment and will demonstrate experience of promoting excellence in areas of administration and the provision of support services, including the setting of service standards and monitoring performance.
Experience of effective budgetary management and experience of research funding principles and governance is essential. You will also have demonstrable experience of recruiting, managing and developing individuals effectively and will have demonstrable experience of enacting principles of employment law underpinning university HR policy. Experience of project and change management is also key.
You will have strong analytical and interpersonal skills to work effectively with senior stakeholders and will demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal guidance, and as part of a team, and the ability to establish priorities and manage multiple activities.
You will demonstrate innovative thinking in order to challenge the work produced to ensure it is of exceptional quality, be resilient and diplomatic and be intuitive, with the confidence and know-how to deliver clear, constructive feedback to all stakeholders. Flexibility, an attitude of responsibility and enthusiasm for, and commitment to, a high quality service provision is also essential.
