Job summary

An excellent opportunity has become available for an experienced and dynamic clinician Physiotherapist to join our therapy team in Surgery.

At Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust we are keen to provide specialist therapeutic input to our population, we want our therapists to have enhanced skills and knowledge to provide current best evidence-based practice, therefore as part of this position we also provide:

o Paid membership to the British Journal of Surgery (BJS) or the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM).

o Paid attendance at International Conference of Surgery & National Critical Care Conference.

o Paid membership to ACPICR, APCRC or other specialist body.

o Funded postgraduate master's level study in programmes such as: Surgical Innovation MSc, Clinical & Surgical Sciences MSc

(Research), MSc Rehabilitation Sciences.

o Funded supplementary external courses such as: physical rehabilitation, cardiorespiratory physiotherapy skills, understanding pain,

balance/gait, X-Ray & bloods interpretation, intensive care physiotherapy.

o Leadership courses or postgraduate leadership study.

o The ability to develop the entire surgical rehabilitation pathway, including early intervention initiatives in critical care.

o Other development opportunities specified by candidates will be considered for facilitation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assess and treat people in line with emerging evidence and guidelines; you will be innovative and personalised in your approach. Participating in the supervision and training of team members and supporting the continual evaluation and improvement of the service.

The successful candidate will be required to assess and treat patients being dealt with within Surgical wards, including those with multiple pathologies and complex medical and social issues.

The successful candidate will be expected to show a keen interest in service development. You will need to possess specialist knowledge of General Surgery and ideally some respiratory knowledge/experience.

Candidates are expected to ensure that patients return home or transfer to intermediate care services at their optimum/to optimise their level of functioning. They will be expected to have skills to assist the Multi-disciplinary Team ensure a steady transfer of patients into appropriate community settings.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the in-service training programme for the specialty and to deliver fieldwork education to professional undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to 7 days working and on call working, we provide comprehensive training programmes to ensure individuals are confident in contributing to these.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 286,700,

providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development of our Pleck Road site was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. Work is also well underway on its multi-million pound new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre which will house a new Emergency Department (including Children's Emergency Department), co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and Urgent Care Centre. This is scheduled for completion this year.

The Therapy service is integral to patient flow in and out of the busy acute hospital and we are involved in new developments to provide care at the right time, in the right place, and with the right professional. For this reason, we are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to work within Therapy Services alongside nursing and medical colleagues on General Surgery to promote real improvements in patient safety, patient experience, and clinical effectiveness.

Job responsibilities

To obtain consent as outlined in Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Trust policies.

To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work.

To be responsible for organising and planning own caseload to meet service and patient priorities, readjusting plans as situations change/arise.

To undertake a proficient assessment of patients, including those with diverse/multi pathologies by using clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques.

To formulate and deliver an individual Physiotherapy treatment programme based on sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills, knowledge and skills of treatment techniques, manual Physiotherapy techniques, patient education and other alternative options.

To be responsible for providing Physiotherapy assessment and treatment plans for patients within a designated clinical area of work.

To formulate realistic goals and participate in discharge planning as appropriate within the multi-disciplinary team.

To effectively communicate with patients, family/carers who may have barriers to understanding or communicating, blind, deaf, dysphasic, or who do not have English as their first language.

To evaluate patient progress, reassess and change treatment programmes if required.

To be responsible for maintaining accurate, confidential, and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) Standards of Practice, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards of conduct, and to follow Trust documentation policies.

To actively participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings and integrate Physiotherapy treatment into the overall treatment programme. This may include discussion of patient care, patient progress, and involvement in discharge planning from the healthcare provider setting.

To be an active member of the respiratory on-call evening and weekend service as well as weekend physiotherapy service following the completion of the necessary training and when competency levels have been achieved.

When working out of hours undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with respiratory problems and maintain associated records as autonomous practitioner with support always being available.

When working out of hours, provide feedback to medical, nursing, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patients respiratory functioning.

To ensure that your own practice meets the level of competency required by professional standards of physiotherapy practice.
