Job overview

As a Phlebotomy Co-ordinator you will lead a group of phlebotomists and support workers and provide effective coordination of the service. You will be a fully competent phlebotomist and will be expected to set and maintain high standards of patient care and blood sample collection. You will be working unsupervised, getting support from line-managers as appropriate. You will work in various locations across the trust and in the community supervising the work of blood collection staff. You will have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients. You will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technical and sometimes difficult situations. You will be required to communicate effectively with patients and to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organizations. Your contribution towards team development will require your active participation in people governance procedures consistent with Trust policies. You may be required to undertake additional tasks in support of the general management of the department.

Main duties of the job

A vacancy has arisen for a full-time phlebotomy Co-ordinator within the department of Phlebotomy at Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. This position is cross-site. 

This is a challenging role responsible for managing and supporting the department’s clinical and admin workload. The role will involve supporting all administrative issues relating to phlebotomy and pathology transport within acute and community sites by using a range of internal systems and tools. You will need to be an experienced phlebotomist having extensive experience in adult, pediatrics and domiciliary phlebotomy. 

We are looking for a person with excellent administrative skills, an enthusiastic team player with a flexible approach to working and excellent communication skills. You should be persuasive, credible with the ability to work in a calm, logical and methodical way whilst being able to multi-task in a busy environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job Purpose:

To co-ordinate and validate the activities of the routine blood collection services across outpatient, inpatient, GP Surgeries and clinics and the provision of an extensive Home blood collection Domiciliary service.

To set and maintain high standards of patient care and blood sample collection.

To extract blood samples from patients in a manner that makes the blood sample suitable for analytical, therapeutic or diagnostic testing and purpose.

To effectively manage contingencies that arise during the day to day running of
phlebotomy services.

To work with other experts to design and deliver the phlebotomy training and
induction programme.

To co-ordinate and participate in the training of phlebotomists.

To participate in people governance procedures such as staff recruitment and
appraisal and attendance management.

To prepare and check staff rotas, attendance, staff wages and overtime claims.

To Co-ordinate the stock and non-stock ordering for phlebotomy.

To represent the department at meetings, to promote good working relationships across internal and external boundaries, being the first point of contact for phlebotomy for any day-to-day problems that arise.

Experience

Essential criteria

Supervisory management qualification (NVQ level 3) or equivalent experience At least three years Phlebotomy experience paediatric blood taking experience experience of Domiciliary blood taking.

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills Good IT skills with a knowledge of conventional IT software e.g. Microsoft Office Able to lead a team Able to work independently
