Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative person to join learning disability psychological professionals who are based in the community and part of a multidisciplinary learning disability community health service. The service has bases in Preston, Chorley and West Lancashire and also has excellent links with local clinical psychology training courses (Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester).

The post-holder will receive regular supervision from a qualified clinical psychologist.

An upper second-class degree or above in Psychology and eligibility for graduate BPS membership is essential.

This post offers the opportunity to joint work with a multidisciplinary team for adults with a learning disability. The post-holder's main role will be to work under the supervision of a clinical psychologist and to assist in the delivery of psychological support to adults with a learning disability.

This will include opportunities/requirements to deliver a range of assessments and interventions under the supervision of a qualified psychologist for adults with learning disabilities.

Previous experience of contact with adults with learning disabilities is essential. There may also be opportunities for service related research.

Main duties of the job

Under supervision from a qualified psychologist to assist in the professional and psychological care of clients within the service across all sectors of care by providing basic aspects of psychological assessment and psychological interventions.

To assist in the development, design and implementation of programme and project work. To assist in the administration and interpretation of outcome related measures, collation and recording of statistics and production of relevant reports.

All clinical work and actions to take place under the management and supervision of qualified psychology staff according to an agreed plan and associated goals within parameters set out by the Division of Clinical Psychology and Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust departmental policies and procedures in connection with Assistant Psychologists.

Formal supervision with a named member of qualified psychology staff to take place on a weekly basis to facilitate work with additional frequent opportunities for informal contact with qualified psychology staff for guidance and advice

Education/Qualifications

Essential

An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology. Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential

A good knowledge of lifespan psychology applied to health care. An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with psychological/mental health difficulties and learning disabilities.

Desirable

An understanding of Clinical Psychology and its applications.

Experience

Essential

Contact with people with learning disabilities.

Desirable

Experience of paid work with adults with learning disabilities. To have worked as part of a team within a statutory or voluntary care setting. Experience in conducting research projects or service related audit. Experience of delivering training. Experience of group work.

Skills & Abilities

Essential

Ability to undertake psychologically informed research projects under supervision. Good communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work across a number of different settings. Experience using computers for databases or data-analysis. Ability to work with people from different backgrounds and of different ages. An ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines. An ability to interact effectively with clients, family members/paid carers. Ability to work reliably and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals.

Desirable

Ability to communicate sensitive information to others. Ability to organise and prioritise workload and time.
