The Division of Health Research (DHR) within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine is seeking to fill a Research Associate position.

In this role, you will join a new 2-year research project funded by NHS England via Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, in which Lancaster University is the evaluation partner. The project involves the evaluation in relation to the efficacy and safety of using technology-enabled smart medication devices to manage medication adherence. The project will focus on the use of such devices as part of a domiciliary care package to determine whether this provides an effective and time and cost saving solution to the social care recipient, the care provider and local authorities, and improves medication adherence and independence. The evaluation will explore benefits, facilitators, barriers and cost impacts of employing such devices, with an emphasis on what works for whom and what contextual factors or mechanisms may make it work. You will play a key role in conducting the research and disseminating its findings. You will work with an interdisciplinary team.

You will be the lead researcher supporting the evaluation of the project. This includes managing the data collection from participants including from both care recipients and care provider organisations and conducting the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. The project will involve conducting in person, telephone and online surveys and interviews at multiple data collection time points as part of a repeated measures research design. You will be required to use expertise in implementation research methods to drive this. You will help maintain relationships with NHS and Local Government colleagues, and assist in recruiting participating organisations, where necessary. You will liaise with key stakeholders and teams, and ensure key milestones are met. You will also be responsible for writing up the research findings for publications and other dissemination avenues and supporting other project-related tasks as needed (e.g. writing reports, communicating with wider national evaluation leads). You will be required to work as part of a team and be able to work independently and flexibly.

You will have a PhD in Health Research, Public Health or a relevant applied social sciences discipline, or a Masters level degree plus equivalent research experience. You will have experience of quantitative and qualitative research methods and analyses. Knowledge and experience of ethics applications, and collecting, managing and analysing mixed methods data are essential, as is experience of liaising with and collecting data with people who may be experiencing some poor health, or sensory or cognitive impairment. Knowledge and experience of undertaking interviews and strong computer literacy skills are also essential (i.e. Microsoft packages Word, Excel, Teams). It would also be advantageous to have knowledge and/or experience within the project’s relevant topic areas such as ageing, telehealth, implementation evaluation.

This is a commissioned evaluation partnership with the Lancashire and South Cumbia Integrated Care Board and Lancashire County Council, funded by the Adult Social Care Technology Fund (Digital Transformation Fund) – Care Technology Fund, NHS-England. The post will be based in the Division of Health Research at Lancaster University and may involve travel within the region.

Our team and the Division of Health Research provides a friendly environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and actively promotes a healthy work-life balance. The Faculty is committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies and has held a Silver Athena SWAN award since 2014 in recognition of its good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

The position is available from May 2024. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements, within a full-time contract. This role could be undertaken as a hybrid-working position with a minimum of three days a week working at the Health Innovation campus.

You will join Lancaster University on an indefinite contract; however, the role remains contingent on external funding, which is due to come to an end 24 months from commencement of contract.

For further information on the role and to discuss any aspects of the position, please contact: Professor Carol Holland,
