Lancaster, United Kingdom Lancaster University Full time

We are recruiting a Senior Research Associate to lead an 18-month study funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (Improving treatment pathways and outcomes for people with co-occurring mental health problems and alcohol use disorders). The Researcher will be based in the Division of Health Research (DHR) within Lancaster University’s Faculty of Health and Medicine, specifically working in the Spectrum Centre for Mental Health Research. This role will provide high level support to the Principal Investigator (Dr Laura Goodwin) and will involve setting up public and stakeholder groups, identifying the most suitable UK data sources to address our research questions and conducting a systematic review and qualitative analysis.

2020 saw the largest increase in alcohol related deaths since records began. We know that people use alcohol to help them cope with mental health problems and that drinking too much can make your mental health worse, but we know less about the future health of people who have both of these problems (estimated to be 1 million people in England). What we do know is that individuals with both alcohol and mental health problems may not always be able to access the treatments that they need.

This research will help us to understand how treatment can be improved for people who have co-occurring mental health and alcohol problems and will develop clinical and service user recommendations with strong involvement from people who have lived experience of these health problems.

We are looking to recruit someone to this exciting role who has relevant experience of mental health or alcohol (or related) research, with qualitative research skills, experience of working with third sector and community organisations and of public involvement in research.

The Faculty provides an environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee, promoting a healthy work-life balance. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education.

The position is available from 1st February 2023 and we are open to discussing flexible working arrangements including working week and days/hours worked and flexible start and finish times.

You will join us on an indefinite contract however the role remains contingent on external funding which at this time is due to come to an end on 31st July 2024.
