Lancaster, Lancashire, United Kingdom Lancaster University Full time

Location: Bailrigg, Lancaster, UK
Closing Date: Wednesday 29 May 2024
Interview Date: Friday 14 June 2024

The Benedetto lab is looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate to study host-bacterium interactions in C. elegans. The position is funded by the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council for a year.

The Benedetto lab is part of the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences at Lancaster University, UK, and has been funded by the BBSRC, The Wellcome Trust and Northwest Cancer research.

We apply integrated physiology approaches to understand how animal health is achieved through the interplay of organ systems and the gut microbiota, using C. elegans as a reductive model. The current project aims to provide a genome-wide view of C. elegans interactions with distinct gut bacterial invaders, in a bid to identify core gut bacterium regulatory networks. It combines omics approaches, high-throughput genome-wide screens, live-microscopy imaging and image analysis techniques. It is highly multidisciplinary in nature, involves collaborators in Europe, the USA, and the UK, and provides an excellent opportunity to train on advanced microscopy, data analysis and integration.

You are required to hold a postgraduate research degree (at PhD or MSc level, with at least two years relevant research experience) in a relevant field with a publication track-record commensurate to their experience, have expertise in C. elegans or another invertebrate genetic model, and in microbiology, be familiar with online databases and basic bioinformatics tools, have a keen interest for C. elegans and microscopy, and be willing to undergo training and acquire any additional necessary skills. We are looking for a highly motivated and collaborative individual with excellent communication skills. Experience in C. elegans imaging and advanced bacteriology techniques and being able to start as soon as possible will be advantageous. PhD holders will be appointed at spine point 31 and MSc holders will be appointed at a spine point commensurate with their experience relevant to the post.

Our laboratory and the Division of Biomedical and Life Sciences provide a friendly research environment that strongly supports the individual needs of each employee and which actively promotes a healthy work-life balance.
