**Senior Research Associate: Design for Digital Good**
We are looking to appoint a senior postdoctoral researcher with a background in speculative design and prototyping who can bring a strong mix of creativity, conceptual rigour, practical design skills, stakeholder engagement and empirical research expertise to the exciting £4M “Digital Good Network” research project.
The post-holder will be based in ImaginationLancaster, the world leading Design-based research lab at Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Arts (LICA) and work closely with Dr Dan Richards, Lecturer in Data Prototyping and Visualisation.
LICA encompasses Lancaster’s teaching and research activities in Art, Architecture, Design, Film and Theatre. LICA is a vibrant and highly supportive learning environment where a strong research ethos underpins and shapes everything we do.

**The Project and Research Programme**
Digital technologies mediate, shape and are shaped by relationships. These include our relationships with ourselves, with intimate and institutional others, and with digital agents. The digital is also where people relate to each other. Research into digital relationships spans from the micro-behavioural to the macro-institutional, the individual to the global, the interpersonal to the cultural, the personal to terabytes of data.
The Digital Good Network addresses the urgent question: what should a good digital society look like and how do we get there? This question is pressing across current and emerging technologies, including social media, MedTech, FinTech, climate tech, wearables, AI and machine learning, automation, AR and VR, IoT and beyond. To address this neglected normative question, the network brings social science together with STEM and arts and humanities, putting distinct conceptions of the digital good into interdisciplinary dialogue with one another, surfacing and bridging differences. The ultimate aim is to enable societies to realise the digital good.
The Lancaster team’s research programme will focus on speculative design and provocative prototypes (or “provotypes) as a means to bridge the gap between academics, industry and publics and to help us collectively understand, define, question and challenge what constitutes “good” relationships with digital technologies. Within this work we will primarily focus on questions of the self and identity in relation to emerging technologies, and work with academic and external stakeholders to explore and evaluate possible futures and future relationships with digital technologies.
This programme will both contribute to and integrate aspects of the project’s other work streams which will explore how we can define and evaluate digital goodness in ways that speak to questions of equity, sustainability and resilience.

The post is for 1 year (12 months) full-time (36.5 hours per week) commencing 31st July 2023.
