Job summary

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children is a specialised tertiary hospital, often taking the most complex referrals from both local and national centres and a designated major trauma centre for the South West of England.

The successful candidate will a provide highly specialist physiotherapy service for babies on the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at St Michael's Hospital and their high risk follow up service as per the NICE guidelines. The postholder will also support the neurodevelopmental caseload (under 2 years) within Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and will be a valued member of this team, including supervision and development of rotational band 6 physiotherapists. The postholder will assist in the development of this service as a member of the multidisciplinary team and provide a source of expertise locally, nationally and internationally.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael's hospital and the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children are specialised tertiary centres, taking the most complex referrals from both local and national centres. St Michael's Neonatal Unit is a level 3 surgical and regional therapeutic hypothermia unit. You will work within an experienced therapy team and have access to wider teams at BRHC.

Main duties of the job

o provide a highly specialised service that includes the assessment, treatment and management of babies on the neonatal intensive care units and their 2 year follow up, assisting in the development, planning and progression of service provision. To act as a source of expertise and demonstrate advanced knowledge and experience in the highly skilled management of high risk preterm and full-term babies and infants, using standardised assessment tools to inform their clinical skills Hammersmith Neonatal Neurological Examination and Bayley Scales of Infant Development. To provide specialist advice to other members of the multi-disciplinary team and to provide clinical education and training to others within the trust and externally. To take a lead role in the management of more difficult and complex cases within a multi-disciplinary team approach, acting as an autonomous practitioner. To assist across the physiotherapy service, supporting colleagues to provide suitable assessment and neurodevelopmental opportunities for all babies and toddlers.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Michael's hospital and the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children are specialised tertiary centres, taking the most complex referrals from both local and national centres. Significant and appropriate post graduate experience across a wide range of acute specialities Experience of working within paediatrics neurosciences at a senior level (Band 6 or above) Evidence of working within a multidisciplinary team Previous experience of working with preterm infants and young children, including on the neonatal intensive care unit Knowledge of a wide range of approaches to the management of complex patients in neonatal intensive care, (respiratory , surgical, orthopaedic and developmental) Knowledge of appropriate assessment and outcome measures in the management of high risk infants Knowledge of standardised assessments AIMS, BSID, GM's, HINE/HNNE, NBO
