Job summary

The Pain Management Service is an innovative department, providing a holistic inpatient and outpatient services based on best evidence-based practice. The multidisciplinary team offers a full range of Pain Management interventions ranging from uni and multidisciplinary clinics, group sessions for patients with back pain and fibromyalgia, specialist clinics for headaches, and pain intervention procedures using both fluoroscopy and ultrasound.

We work closely with the onsite palliative care team for people with cancer pain or other life limiting conditions. The Service also sees children over the age of ten years.

There are currently 2 Pain Consultants, one specialty grade doctor, 5 Clinical Psychologists (part of a dedicated Clinical Psychology Service), Senior Nurse, 3 acute pain nurses, 3 physiotherapists, two occupational therapists, two therapy assistants as well as two health care assistants who assist in clinics. Pain intervention sessions are carried out in the Arthur Levin Day Surgery, where trained theatre and day surgery staff are on site to assist and ultrasound guided procedures are done in the Emerson unit with the assistance of the specialist pain nurse.

The Service sees more than 1600 new patients per year and more than 8000 patient episodes by the whole team.

Main duties of the job

To provide a consultant service within a multidisciplinary pain team for patients with chronic pain.

To ensure personal knowledge of, and compliance with, Trust and departmental protocols.

To maintain high quality of patient care with minimal risk and enhance patient satisfaction with informed consent following GMC guidelines.

To help in the delivery of effective services within the agreed budget.

To co-operate with other departments and agencies to meet the objectives of the Pain Services, Anaesthetic and Critical Care Departments.

To accept to work in a flexible timetable.

Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

Promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the hospital and community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.

Take part in multidisciplinary case discussions and meetings.

Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines working closed with the clinical lead.

Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients, and A&E.

Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care.

To provide training, supervision and career development to junior doctors and career grade.

Qualifications

Essential

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. FRCA or its recognised equivalent

Desirable

Other professional qualification or higher degree , in medical education, clinical research or management. Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists FFPMRCA or equivalent. Membership of appropriate professional organization IASP, British Pain Society, FIPP or EFIC

Entry Criteria

Essential

Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council. Meets the criteria set out in the Specialist generic capabilities framework - detailed in the person specification

Desirable

Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at time of interview

Experience

Essential

Knowledge and experience of working in the National Health Service Advanced training and experience in pain medicine or equivalent
