Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Speech and Language Therapist wishing to develop their skills in the area of ENT & related disorders.

The post holder will work with the Service Lead for Head and Neck/ENT related disorders treating, managing and supporting patients and their carers with highly complex communication and swallowing disorders as a consequence of acquired communication difficulties, acquired swallowing difficulties, voice disorders and head and neck cancer. You will also support the development of the Voice Service, in particular the service to Trans and non-binary people in line with the All Wales Gender Identity pathway.

Applicants must be flexible, well organised, possess strong communication & negotiation skills and be able to contribute to changes in service delivery and spontaneously educate carers, families and other professionals.

Main duties of the job

The successful post-holder will work as part of the Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service and will have regular access to senior colleagues. We are a friendly team who offer Continuing Professional Development, clinical and managerial supervision, and encourage staff to actively engage with service development and improvement. There is a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary team working throughout the Health Board and the Speech and Language Therapy Department has close support networks with other hospital teams and Community based services.

Treat, manage and support patients and carers of patients with highly complex communication and swallowing disorders as a consequence of acquired communication difficulties, acquired swallowing difficulties, voice disorders and head and neck function independently with a developed level of clinical expertise in dysphagia and acquired communication difficulties and fulfil the core responsibilities identified.

Job responsibilities

To manage a complex, specialist caseload, independently demonstrating knowledge of advanced management in dysphagia, including knowledge of Videofluroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS), Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and tracheostomy.

Demonstrate evidence-based, clinically effective practice and keep abreast of new practice development, particularly related to dysphagia in adults.Supervise the work of Support Workers and Volunteers when requiredContribute to the induction, mentoring and support of junior SLTsSupport the development of SLT students on placement within the SLT service, with specific responsibility for dysphagia, and including the assessment of students on examination a defined caseload independently, including managing own time and prioritising tasks.Facilitate clinical case discussions as part of peer review, particularly related to adults with dysphagia.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

Degree in Speech and Language Therapy HCPC registration RCSLT membership RCSLT Accredited Dysphagia Training Member of relevant CEN Successful completion of specialist short courses relevant to area of clinical expertise to postgraduate diploma level Knowledge of a wide range of specialist assessment tools and procedures to evaluate communication and/or eating and drinking skills, particularly relevant to the specialist caseload Knowledge of key characteristics leading to a specialist differential diagnosis relevant to an area of clinical expertise Knowledge of selecting, setting and evaluating specialist treatment goals Knowledge of a specialist range of therapeutic interventions demonstrating the evidence base for these approaches Knowledge of multidisciplinary team approaches Knowledge and understanding of key documents and legislation relating to specialist area. Well established knowledge of legal and professional issues of confidentiality Knowledge of record keeping standards, data protection / Caldicott guidelines Knowledge of health and safety issues Basic understanding of the principals of clinical governance / audit Highly developed auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
