The aim of the Research and Development Team is to drive commercial growth by creating technical opportunities and building them into great tasting, healthy beverages, promoting competitive advantage for Twinings.  The R&D Junior Development & Sensory Technologist will support the implementation of new raw material formats to facilitate cost innovation by developing and validating new blends using new material formats.
Key ResponsibilitiesBlend Development Process Implementation
  • Design, conduct, analyse and report R&D lab-scale trials on new materials through new processes.
  • Conduct lab-scale process tests to establish key process parameters for optimum efficiency and end product quality.
  • Support establishment of new methods for implementing new ingredient formats into production.
  • Develop expertise on pilot scale equipment.
  • Liaise closely with factory teams to support upscaling for production.
  • Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of product development, ingredient functionality, blending, agglomeration and other process techniques.
  • Role model Twinings’ Innovation Behaviours.
  • Lead and support formulation and creation of commercially viable product recipes to comply with agreed specifications using materials, such as herbs, flavours, wellbeing ingredients and other potential new beverage ingredients.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders including raw material sourcing, quality, ethical and regulatory teams to ensure ingredients and products meet the correct standards in terms of quality and commercial considerations.
  • Identify opportunities to drive greater efficiency /agility in NPD development and delivery and propose solutions.
Sensory Testing and Reporting
  • Plan, schedule, and administer all aspects of internal sensory panel – including sourcing of samples, set up, execution and analysis of testing related to new ingredient formats/new processes sand overseeing of technicians as needed to support larger sensory tests.
  • Develop a good understanding of the sensory methodologies required to support decision making for new ingredient formats/new processes.
  • Recommend methods to address key objectives and key questions for new ingredients formats/new processes. Analysing data via RedJade / ExcelStat, writing preliminary reports. Delivery of data and reports to schedule to support project timelines.
  • Ensure all project work is recorded, reported and compliant with the Twinings process, fulfils data traceability requirements and complies with all legal and ISO requirements related to product.
  • Liaise with Developers etc on project and sample logistics. In partnership with Sensory Internal Panel owner, manage panel workload and flag early when deadlines cannot be met.
  • Help build the employee panel into a community of engaged tasters who can support the wider sensory function.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working within an R&D, sensory or process engineering environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in product development.
  • Degree in food science or other relevant subject.
  • Experience within an FMCG environment with reference to NPD.
  • Level 2 Food Safety or good understanding of food safety as well as basic scientific techniques and good scientific practice.
  • Experience working with food/ beverage raw materials or development manufacturing trial experience desirable.
  • Ideally interested in food/flavours with good sensory acuity.
  • Strong technical rigour and organisation skills with demonstrated high attention to detail.
  • Good understanding of food safety as well as scientific techniques and good scientific practice.
