The Position

We are looking for a talented Research and Development Manager who is value-driven, with uncompromising integrity and a high focus on collaboration and delivery.


Reporting to the CTO, you will be responsible for the delivery of our innovation roadmap through collaboration with the wider science, operations, and engineering teams. This will involve developing and implementing a strategic roadmap for advancing technologies, ensuring alignment with sustainability goals and industry standards, allowing Oort to stay at the forefront of advancements and contribute to industry leadership.


We believe that driving down the cost is essential to enable a market led transition to green hydrogen and so our innovation must align with this mission; projects will be assessed for manufacturability as well as innovation.


You will lead and inspire a small team to drive innovation from concept to delivery, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge-sharing and promoting professional development. Essential to this role is the ability to efficiently manage projects, ensuring timely delivery, budget compliance, and adherence to quality standards in the development and testing of green electrolysis.


Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects which position the group for future success.
  • Monitoring development of existing and new technologies and understanding how and when they can be applied to Oort’s projects.
  • Support and act as the point of contact for new ideas generated by others in the company and draft the required documentation to assess new ideas.
  • Identify and coordinate grant submissions for the company, actively looking for grant calls that support Oort’s technological direction.


Project Delivery

  • Set project direction, planning, goals, milestones and ensure project deliverables meet strategic company objectives. Co-ordinate and monitor joint industry partnerships, tests, prototypes, and pilots.
  • Plan and oversee projects budget.
  • Deliver projects within the planned timelines.
  • Track progress and address any immediate issues to maintain efficient workflow and adherence to deadlines.
  • Provide technology assessments and expertise throughout the full life cycle of projects, from origination to operation.
  • Perform a return on investment and review of each project to inform future packages of work and continuously improve.
  • Input in and prepare any R&D related documentation required for product submission or required by any relevant party including R&D tax credits submission.
  • Perform assessments of technology risks and mitigation strategies in projects.


Team

  • Collaborate with team members to oversee tasks, address challenges, and ensure alignment with project timelines.
  • Engage in regular communication with team members, providing guidance, feedback, and support to facilitate a collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner.

Other

  • Conduct ad-hoc technical assessments of new technologies and project opportunities.
  • Perform technical deep dives in selected technologies and use cases.
  • Review of suppliers and partners documents.


This role will require occasional travel to our Sheffield design office and London.


Person Specification - Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

The materials and products Oort Energy uses as part of its manufacturing process are such that smokers are placed at increased risk to their health and safety by exposure to them. As a result of this Oort Energy is unable to employ smokers.


Knowledge - Essential

  • Master’s or PhD in Chemistry.


Skills - Essential

  • Strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritise critical tasks and manage workload from different projects. Systematic approach to tasks.
  • Thorough with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Strong project management skills - demonstrable track record in project planning and execution.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Robust financial and budgetary planning skills.


Experience - Essential

  • 2 - 5 years’ experience managing Research and Development teams.
  • Experience in a similar or related role.
  • Ability to develop processes and strategies and communicate recommendations to Senior Leadership Team.


Experience - Desirable

  • Experience in scale-up manufacturing (bench to industrial/commercial) development.
  • 5 years + experience with hydrogen systems or other similar electrochemical technologies.
  • Experience working with technology in electrochemical, chemical, or similar industries.
