Financial Accountant


Locations: Central Birmingham

Salary: up to £55,000 depending on experience

Job Type: Permanent

Working Pattern: Hybrid, two days onsite, three days WFH.


Latham & Bond HR are currently supporting our client, a market-leading charity, in their search for a Financial Accountant. This role is critical to ensuring that financial processes, systems, and policies are effective, and to ensuring the accurate processing of financial and non-financial data. The Financial Accountant will be responsible for all financial transactions and will ensure compliance with the Charities SORP and tax regulations.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Ensure that financial statements adhere to regulatory standards and accurately reflect the charity’s financial health.
  • Manage the annual statutory reporting and work with auditors in compliance with current reporting standards.
  • Provide accurate numbers for all disclosures in the annual report and statutory accounts.
  • Work closely with the commercial team, ensuring the accuracy of project revenue, costs, and profitability.
  • Ensure Balance Sheet reconciliations are completed to an excellent standard, in a timely manner, and have been subjected to a robust review process.
  • Prepare VAT returns, including partial exemptions calculations, and oversee system enhancements to meet digital tax transfer regulations.
  • Support projects to implement new and update existing systems for processing financial and non-financial transactions.
  • Oversee restricted funds reporting, working with the Management Accountant to ensure proper reporting of grants.
  • Manage finance projects.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, financial controls, legal requirements, and industry standards.
  • Proactively identify problems and opportunities to standardise, streamline/improve processes and analysis, and improve accuracy.
  • Research technical accounting issues for compliance.
  • Responsible for the year-end close process.
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Manage and comply with charity and government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Perform additional financial duties as necessary.


Qualifications / Experience:


  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or finance.
  • ACCA, ACA, or CIMA Qualified.
  • Excellent relationship builder at all levels, with a hands-on approach and team player.
  • Self-motivated and driven, with a good understanding of business finance requirements.
  • Ability to embrace change – open to new ways of working and changes to systems and processes.
  • Experience handling annual audits and working with an external auditor.
  • Knowledge of accounting, tax, and reporting standards & principles.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organise, and prioritise workload to meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Competency in dealing with confidential data and exercising sound judgment.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Experience using Microsoft Business Central accounting systems.
  • Proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally, driving shared goals and achieving business objectives.
