The Business Development Manager (Trade) – United Kingdom & Europe is a hands-on role in facilitating and securing export and trade opportunities between South Australian businesses and customers in the United Kingdom & European markets.


The position is located within the Office of the Agent General in London and requires a business development ‘star’ to facilitate connections between South Australian companies across key industry sectors and your extensive network of importers, distributors, retailers, e-commerce providers and customers.


You will have a wide network of contacts across the United Kingdom, in particular within the above-mentioned prioritised sectors of focus that will provide South Australian businesses linkages to importers, buyers, retailers and influencers.


The role also requires leveraging and managing of stakeholders. These include, but are not limited to; Government agencies, industry associations and membership groups, regional development agencies, wholesale and retail cooperatives, and Chambers of Commerce.

Duties include:


  • Market research/ analysis to identify opportunities for South Australian businesses and to provide impartial insights on trading dynamics within the United Kingdom and wider Europe.
  • Contribute to the development of the trade development strategy to drive awareness of South Australia businesses within the United Kingdom and wider Europe, leading to commercial outcomes.
  • Utilise and build on your existing network to facilitate introductions to support commercial outcomes for South Australian businesses.
  • Develop new contacts and networks to understand export and trade opportunities for South Australian companies seeking to enter the United Kingdom market.
  • Constantly monitor market developments in the United Kingdom market to provide insight and strategic advice to South Australian companies.
  • Maintain and build relationships with key in-market companies, industry players, government agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Provide practical support when required and appropriate in meetings (both on-line and face to face) and at trade shows/ networking events that relate to priority sectors for South Australia.
  • Deliver accurate and timely reporting as required.


What you’ll need to be successful:

We are seeking an experienced business development professional with a strong client focus to promote South Australia as an attractive source of products and services. The ideal candidate would have strong food, wine and agribusiness background but experience and networks in any or several of the priority sectors would be considered beneficial.

Relevant tertiary qualification and / or a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a business development or related roles.

  • A proven track record within a commercial environment, with the ability to apply your best practices to trade facilitation.
  • Strong strategic and problem-solving mindset with the ability to put the strategy into practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of international trade, routes to market, market access, trends and developments including an understanding of South Australia’s competitive advantage and government policies.
  • Effective communication and influencing skills, with an ability to use good judgement as a government representative.
  • Effective stakeholder management skills with the confidence to occasionally work with ambiguity.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Confidently use digital workplace tools to solve problems, be productive, connect and collaborate with others.
  • Experience in utilising CRM systems.

Work Authorisation - to be eligible for employment with the Department for State Development, candidates must be legally authorised to live and work in the United Kingdom at the time of appointment.


Pay: From £65,000.00 per year
