The Royal Hospital Chelsea: Opportunity for an Experienced Commissioner
The Royal Hospital Chelsea, a site of historic and cultural significance, seeks an experienced and skilled Commissioner with expertise in heritage, listed buildings, and architecture. This role offers the chance to guide the preservation and development of one of the UK’s foremost heritage sites, while contributing to a vibrant, inclusive community.
About the Role
As a Specially Appointed Commissioner at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, you will play a key role in preserving, enhancing, and celebrating the legacy of this historic institution. You will ensure its architectural and institutional significance is upheld while supporting its evolving needs.
Responsibilities include attending four Board meetings annually, contributing to sub-committees, and participating in key community events such as Founder’s Day.
Essential Criteria
We are looking for individuals with:
- Expertise in heritage planning for high-value historical sites, ensuring the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s legacy is protected and celebrated.
- Deep institutional insight, appreciating the unique heritage, cultural, and community context of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
- Expertise in historic architecture, with experience in both preservation and the practical management of listed buildings.
- Strategic governance experience, including board-level or senior trustee roles, balancing heritage conservation with operational goals.
Desirable Criteria
Additional qualifications include:
- Experience with historic collections and hosting commercial or community events in heritage settings.
- Leadership experience, including chairing boards or sub-committees, alongside senior-level management skills.
- Independent judgement and the ability to offer fresh perspectives on the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s strategy.
- Governance expertise and a collaborative approach to decision-making.
- An understanding of military, veterans’ affairs, or allied service communities.
