Due to the continued growth and expansion of our multi-disciplinary R&D team, we are excited to be recruiting for a new Head of Engineering Project Management. This is a new function located inside the R&D team and reports directly into the Executive R&D Leadership. This a challenging job function and requires a deep understanding and proven experience in leading cross functional Engineering project teams. The recently reshaped R&D department are team of highly capable Systems, mechanical, Simulation, Electronic and Software engineering individuals that work cohesively together that turn up everyday and seek innovation opportunities that deliver clinical superior outcomes for our patients.


We are looking for someone that can galvanise our individual project team and inspire them to deliver great things with new levels of collaboration, that increase our speed to market metrics. We are looking for an individual that can lead by fine example and demonstrate superior leadership, influencing all product development stakeholders to bring our aggressive growth product roadmap to fruition.


The role


As Head of Engineering Project Management, you will be responsible for functional management of a small but growing team of Project managers, collaborating with our cross functional engineering teams managing the execution technical deliverables/tasks and drive projects through our stage gate framework. You will work with Project Managers, Functional Leaders, and the Executive team to facilitate creation product development roadmap, able to define accurate NRE budgets, detailed project plans and ultimately deliver real business value.


Key duties:


  • Develop and deliver Blatchford’s R&D Product Development Roadmap, 1-3 years focusing on the required business goals.
  • Support, guide and inputting commercial/clinical requirements into our 3-5 Innovation Roadmap.
  • Facilitate project definition and documenting project scope, objectives and desired business outcomes.
  • Setting and managing stakeholder expectations, both internally and externally, producing suitable EPM dashboards for complete transparency across Senior leadership teams.
  • Collaborating with the wider R&D leadership, preparing a project budgets, ensure scope is realistic/accurate and establishing control to ensure fiscal/commercial compliance.
  • Recruitment, development and coaching for the Engineering Project Management team, proactively leading a team of professional project managers.
  • Define, report and reporting on measures or KPI for all product development projects, ensuring business contributions are well controlled.
  • Managing project risk, specifically supporting inputs at system integration points and defining realistic cross functional mitigation plan - Proposing timeline & budget plans to executive leadership.
  • Collaborating with Senior R&D functional leaders to develop and execute corrective actions, addressing time pressures, skillset issues or capacity opportunities.
  • Manage, control, and track all project resourcing levels, including internal/external people resources, purchased material and device validation builds.
  • Monitor and coordinate all technical documentation across a Stage Gate process, including overseeing/guiding Design Transfer, in accordance with ISO 13485, FDA and MDR requirements.

What are we looking for?


  • BSc or equivalent in Engineering
  • Extensive experience in medical device development, including experience in leadership roles in all phases of product development.
  • Demonstrated experience of direct management and leadership experience.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Solution orientated, enjoys getting results and delivering technical excellence.
  • High level of enthusiasm, motivation, and drive for results.
