Job Introduction
BBC UX&D designs amazing digital experiences - from apps to websites, iPlayer to News. It’s an exciting time to be a design researcher as we focus our efforts around six key products, and the systems and services that support them.
UX designers, architects, writers and researchers collaborate closely with product, editorial and technical teams from across the BBC. Together we create elegant, delightful digital experiences on mobile, tablet, desktop and TV across a range of digital products. We also design the ‘behind the scenes’ tools, services and employee experience which help make these happen.
Working together with users and colleagues, you’ll take a holistic, human-centred approach to help create a BBC that’s truly fit for the digital age.
In UX&D you’ll have the opportunity to regularly rotate in to new spaces.
- Content discovery.
- Participatory experiences.
- Personalisation and account-based/signed-in experiences.
Main Responsibilities
As a Design Researcher, you’ll be working as part of a small squad that looks after the needs of several products. The research we run varies in size, scope and complexity - so you’ll be comfortable juggling a few projects at a time with the support of your squad colleagues and squad lead. Some projects you’ll lead, some you’ll collaborate on, and occasionally you might commission an external agency.
On a typical project, you’ll:
- Lead projects through all stages of the research process from briefing and proposal formulation, to set up, fieldwork, analysis and insight sharing.
- Clarify foggy projects by working with stakeholders to better understand their research needs.
- Draw on your knowledge of a range of methodologies to make recommendations on the best approach.
- Coordinate project set up - sample definition, recruitment, stimulus creation, discussion guide etc.
- Organise and run fieldwork.
- Analyse data and draw insights.
- Present your findings to stakeholders.
You’re comfortable advocating for the user and their needs. You’ll enjoy building empathy with different kinds of stakeholders, flexing your approach to achieve the best results. You’ve an extensive knowledge of different research methodologies, and are able to articulate insights in a way that lands with colleagues and results in real, tangible changes.
You’ve probably worked alongside designers and business analysts to discover requirements in complex environments, and are happy and capable running multiple projects at once. You enjoy teaching others, and helping teams get more from research.
