About the role
You will be joining us at an exciting time as we continue to be committed to tracking, understanding and combatting COVID-19. We are sequencing thousands of virus genomes and using the data to trace transmission, inform public health measures and are monitoring for new variants. We are also working to understand how the virus interacts with our cells, and to develop new diagnostics.
In this laboratory based role;
- You will be responsible for library construction and sequencing of COVID-19 samples, working with a number of different robotic platforms and Illumina sequencing instruments in a high throughput environment.
- Working as part of a team you will produce quality data within defined timeframes and assist with the everyday running of the laboratory.
- You will have a strong understanding of the COVID-19 pipeline SOPs and the scientific theory underpinning the processes.
Working Pattern
- The facility has the ability to operate for 12 hours a day, seven days a week, between the hours of 8am and 8pm, although the working pattern is predominantly between 8am and 6pm.
- Your shifts will involve an 8 hour working day, alternating between 08:00-16:30 and 09:30-18:00, or 11:30-20:00 when required.
- Your working pattern will consist of 4 days on followed by 2 days off, alternating between the early and later start times every 3 shift blocks.
- A shift premium is included for those who work the shift pattern.
Essential Skills
- BSc in a biological science or relevant lab experience.
- A basic and general understanding of molecular biology and associated practical techniques relevant to the role.
- Good manual dexterity and attention to detail; quality driven.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills in managing competing priorities in a busy environment.
- A high level of interpersonal and communications skills.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and efficiently, correctly interpret scientific data and work without supervision.
- Computer literate: Microsoft Office programmes including Word and Excel.
Other information
About us:
You will be working for the DNA Pipelines department which has a central role within the Institute, delivering data to our faculty and external collaborators over a range of techniques and platforms.
DNA library construction is carried out using various liquid handlers such as: SPT Labtech Mosquito, Dragonfly and Apricot, Agilent Bravo, Hamilton Star and Starlet, Beckman platforms and Biosero robotic systems.
DNA Pipelines also carry out manual library construction involving intensive use of single channel pipettes. The libraries are then sequenced on Illumina Sequencing instruments: MiSeq, HiSeq 2500, HiSeq 4000, HiSeq X and NovaSeq, or go for Long Read Sequencing on PacBio and Oxford Nanopore.
