Hinxton, United Kingdom Wellcome Sanger Institute Full time

We have an opportunity for an Advanced Research Assistant to work across The Thomson and Bentley Faculty Groups laboratories, based within the Parasites and Microbes Programme (PaM) at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. This is a laboratory-based role, in which you will be responsible for performing both routine techniques, bespoke experimental processes and method development, with particular focuses on molecular microbiology and genome sequencing. We seek an individual experienced in molecular biology and independent research and development, with an interest in contributing to microbiology research and development of cutting-edge sequencing methods.

About us

We use high throughput genomics to study the genetic diversity, spread and evolution of a number of important pathogenic microorganisms, including _Treponema pallidum_ (causative agent of syphilis and yaws), _Streptococcus pneumoniae, _Neisseria meningitidis_, _Haemophilus influenzae _and _Streptococcus agalactiae_. The Thomson Group have recently received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to perform genomic surveillance of genital ulcer disease samples across multiple Low-and-Middle-Income (LMIC) countries. Meanwhile, the Bentley Group is also conducting extensive genomic surveillance of organisms causing meningitis in LMICs. As part of these projects, we will be sequencing bacterial and viral genomes from a large number of clinical samples collected by our collaborating partners overseas. We will also be performing Research and Development to develop and implement novel methods for targeted genome enrichment from mixed samples.

About the role

This Advanced Research Assistant position is a primarily laboratory-based role where you will be responsible for performing both routine techniques and bespoke processes developed in collaboration with others. You will perform a wide range of molecular biology techniques, including sample extraction, PCR and qPCR, library preparation (Illumina and Oxford Nanopore MinION technologies), and sequencing (primarily MinION). You will assist in the development of novel protocols for targeted genome enrichment sequencing, working independently as well as within a team. You will also work with collaborators around the world to manage the international shipment of microbiological samples, and the receipt and handling of specimens within the laboratory.
