Research & Impact Services (R&IS) is seeking a Research Governance Officer to provide expert practitioner advice on key regulatory matters pertaining to research grants and contracts.

This is a varied role which will support the University’s research active staff in complying with regulatory frameworks such as Export Controls and the Nagoya Protocol, as well as undertaking due diligence reviews on external partners. The postholder will also work closely with senior colleagues to help develop institutional policies and training material in these key areas.

**JOB PURPOSE**

To be responsible for the provision of expert practitioner advice on key regulatory and contractual matters relating to research grants and contracts. This includes UK, EU, and International Export Control frameworks, the Nagoya Protocol, support to the University’s Human Tissue Act Designated Individual, and Due Diligence of research partners required by UKRI and other major research funders.

The role includes the development of an institutional policy framework supported by Standard Operating Procedures and training resources, to support the embedding of expertise in R&IS and Academic Departments. In addition, the role holder will provide advice on specific queries, as these arise, to colleagues in R&IS and the wider University.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**

2. Develop and deliver training relating to key matters of regulatory and contractual compliance to R&IS and relevant Professional Services and Academic Staff, establishing an annual programme of training, updated as required to keep pace with internal and external developments.

3. Provide a help-desk function for R&IS staff with regards to complex matters of regulatory compliance including Export Control and the Nagoya Protocol, providing solutions and referring to more senior colleagues when required, and ensuring that lessons learned are embedded via updated training sessions, and amended SoPs, as required.

4. To provide support to the University's Human Tissue Act Designated Individual, supervising the Research Governance and Quality Assurance Coordinator, as required.

6. Maintaining the University’s records on export controls licences and activities in compliance with requirements from the ECJU and other regulators as necessary

7. Acting as the University’s point of contact in seeking advice from the ECJU when appropriate, with support from the Research Systems & Data Manager as required.

8. Support the wider team to undertake due diligence searches and checks on the University’s national and international research Funders, Partners and Collaborators, working closely in the regard with the Pre-award Grants and Contracts and Research Impact Teams, to identify risks and escalating as appropriate to R&IS Senior Executive Team.

9. To provide support to internal and external audits of University policies and procedures relating to UK, EU, and International Export Control frameworks, the Nagoya Protocol, Due Diligence, and the HTA, working as part of an R&IS team. The postholder will undertake periodic quality assurance checks on projects to ensure compliance with export control regulations and the Nagoya Protocol
