**About the role**
APEM has over 30 years’ experience of delivering high quality water and sediment quality management investigations and schemes. Our services include sampling to investigate the scale, nature and source of problems in a range of aquatic environments from ponds to reservoirs, rivers and estuaries. Using the data that we collect we diagnose the causes of water quality problems and design programmes to manage these issues.
Biological water quality analysis (e.g. through use of macroinvertebrates - SOAF) also features regularly. We also coordinate APEM’s response to pollution incidents. A large, and growing, part of our work is algal bloom and taste and odour compound assessment and management.
You will work within a dynamic team of aquatic environmental scientists with cross-cutting expertise in ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, water quality, fisheries and natural and social capital, to deliver a range of projects for a wide range of clients including the UK water and energy industries, and their environmental regulators.
Key features of the Consultant role are delivery of high-quality outputs within budget, to tight timescales and supporting the management of projects. The role will also require contributing to the production of competitive tenders.
Specific roles and responsibilities and your development aspirations will be discussed and agreed with your line manager as part of APEM’s Be My Best development programme.
You will have opportunities to provide mentoring, support and guidance to graduate scientists, where required.
You will be primarily office-based, although site visits and fieldwork will be required.

Please note that we have two positions available. These being one permanent contract and one 12 month fixed term maternity cover.
**About you**
You will be an enthusiastic self-starter with an interest in the environment.
You will have good IT literacy and data analysis skills, will be numerate and have a good eye for detail.
**Required skills**:

- Typically, 1-2 years’ professional experience
- Experience in river, lake and/or coastal water quality monitoring and assessments
- Excellent Excel and Word skills
**Desirable skills**:

- A relevant higher degree
- An understanding of key UK environmental legislation
- Experience of working with or in a commercial consulting environment
